Between Malkin, Crosby, Neal, if they offered Lundqvist $9MM, they would have an awful hard time filling the rest of the roster. That's just simply wrong. Teams with the space would throw boatloads of cash at him, and if they don't they'd find a way. The Isles, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Washington all come to mind.
He wants to win yes but money still talks.
I'm honestly pissed off with this deal, even as a big Lundqvist fan. Had Lundqvist continued his play for the remainder of the season he would have hardly made $7M on the open market. I am so disappointed that this was the best Sather could come up with given a position of moderate leverage with his poor play. Lundqvist is now an immovable, overpaid ticking time bomb. I still like him, but to be brutally honest I would have much rather traded him and started Cam over giving Lundqvist this borderline albatross of a contract. Butterfly goalies do not age well. Smh.
He got this contract more because of his face and not the skills.
I think a desperate team in need of a goalie like the Oilers would give him 9 mil easily. No, he wouldn't. He would not even come close to that figure. Nobody in their right mind is paying a goaltender that much money.
@AGrossRecord: Lundqvist: "To picture myself anywhere else, it was wrong, never an option."
Been saying it for months now.

Let him go to Edmonton or the Isles then and screw up their cap. When all of Edmonton's kids ELC's end, they will have a hard time signing them all. Isles? He would be exposed even more with the Isles.
If he cared about winning, he would have taken a page from Dustin Brown's playbook.
Absolutely excrutiating. Maybe the worst contract Sather has dolled out in his entire tenure.
Pitts can afford to sign mediocre wingers because Malkin and Crosby make them all look like Brett Hull. That's how they won the cup, and how they play now.
Edmonton would salivate at the opportunity to sign Lundy. It's a lazy and vaccumous move an idiot like Craig MacTavish would make. Though it would make them undeniably better.
Same thing with the Isles.
Half the league would line-up for Lundqvist. It's not even a debate.
I was hoping wasting 8.5 on a guy who inherently cant score when the offense is bottom 10 in the leaguewas sarcaem but I guess not.
Wade Redden, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury and Bobby Holik all say hi.
Those were at least attempts, albeit feeble ones, to improve the team in areas where it was weak.
This isn't even an attempt. It's taking the same model that blatantly hasn't been working, which is put **** on the ice and pray Lundqvist shuts out the universe, and reinstating that model for the next 7 years.
In addition, those other signings were done with the safety net of being able to buy those players out or dump them on a sucker. Today's signing was made in a post-recapture league.
Who cares if we overspent by 1M/year? I don't get all the drama. Hank has been the best player on this team since he's been here. Just don't re-sign Pyatt and there's your 1M...1.5M actually. Is the team any worse off? Nope. When the cap is millions higher in a year or two this is all a non-issue...guess people need to complain about something.

They signed arguably the best player at his position. And someone who has proven he can not only play in NY, but thrive in NY. When was the last time Sather signed someone like that?
They overspent by about 2.5-3MM a year. Can't wait to read all the Sather bashing this summer when he doesn't have the cap space to sign a big time forward and all you coconuts are accusing him of being asleep at the wheel.

It's a $1.6M raise, that's less than Powe + Asham.
