City/State taxes more onerous in NY. Hank could have signed for 8M in Texas, Arizona or Florida and still made more net.

That's just simply wrong. Teams with the space would throw boatloads of cash at him, and if they don't they'd find a way. The Isles, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Washington all come to mind.

He wants to win yes but money still talks.
Between Malkin, Crosby, Neal, if they offered Lundqvist $9MM, they would have an awful hard time filling the rest of the roster.

Let him go to Edmonton or the Isles then and screw up their cap. When all of Edmonton's kids ELC's end, they will have a hard time signing them all. Isles? He would be exposed even more with the Isles.

If he cared about winning, he would have taken a page from Dustin Brown's playbook.

I'm honestly pissed off with this deal, even as a big Lundqvist fan. Had Lundqvist continued his play for the remainder of the season he would have hardly made $7M on the open market. I am so disappointed that this was the best Sather could come up with given a position of moderate leverage with his poor play. Lundqvist is now an immovable, overpaid ticking time bomb. I still like him, but to be brutally honest I would have much rather traded him and started Cam over giving Lundqvist this borderline albatross of a contract. Butterfly goalies do not age well. Smh.

David Clarkson got a big fat contract after not putting up any points beyond the first few weeks of the season.

So Hank would have done just fine.

Who cares if we overspent by 1M/year? I don't get all the drama. Hank has been the best player on this team since he's been here. Just don't re-sign Pyatt and there's your 1M...1.5M actually. Is the team any worse off? Nope. When the cap is millions higher in a year or two this is all a non-issue...guess people need to complain about something.

@AGrossRecord: Lundqvist: "To picture myself anywhere else, it was wrong, never an option."

Been saying it for months now.

But, but, the ISLANDERS!!

Tavares and his magical plays will make them cup contenders for yearzz!! Add in Lundqvist and they're dynasty favorites!!

Pitts can afford to sign mediocre wingers because Malkin and Crosby make them all look like Brett Hull. That's how they won the cup, and how they play now.

Edmonton would salivate at the opportunity to sign Lundy. It's a lazy and vaccumous move an idiot like Craig MacTavish would make. Though it would make them undeniably better.

Same thing with the Isles.

Half the league would line-up for Lundqvist. It's not even a debate.

Nope. Every last GM would show restraint and refuse to spend a penny over 7M, since that's all a goalie should make. lol

Wade Redden, Scott Gomez, Chris Drury and Bobby Holik all say hi.

Those were at least attempts, albeit feeble ones, to improve the team in areas where it was weak.

This isn't even an attempt. It's taking the same model that blatantly hasn't been working, which is put **** on the ice and pray Lundqvist shuts out the universe, and reinstating that model for the next 7 years.

In addition, those other signings were done with the safety net of being able to buy those players out or dump them on a sucker. Today's signing was made in a post-recapture league.

There will be nothing to recapture.

They overspent by about 2.5-3MM a year. Can't wait to read all the Sather bashing this summer when he doesn't have the cap space to sign a big time forward and all you coconuts are accusing him of being asleep at the wheel.

Really not happy with the contract, at all. Just a bad combination of term and AAV. If the term is 7, the AAV should be lower. This is the type of contract you give Hank after he wins a cup, not before.

I couldn't care less about what EDM or the NYI would have offered if he was a UFA, because he would never sign there so it's moot. I'm obviously speculating but those two places are the dumps of the NHL and I don't see Lundqvist as the type of guy who would be happy in low profile places like that; he likes the spotlight

Wow I thought you were being sarcastic :shakehead.

They signed arguably the best player at his position. And someone who has proven he can not only play in NY, but thrive in NY. When was the last time Sather signed someone like that?

Bobby Holik :sarcasm:

I wanted Lundqvist back but not at this price. It's a move that will keep the Rangers in the playoffs for the next 7 years, so Dolan can make money, but with Hank and Nash on the books at well over 16 million this team won't have the room to make the big improvements they need to make to be a Stanley Cup contender. It's more lateral movement. The same lateral movement they've been making since 1940.

whos this big forward we shud be signing this summer thats worth sacrificing our franchise goalie?

Very well said.

It's a $1.6M raise, that's less than Powe + Asham.

And the entire deal is less than twice the $32.275M Sather spent on bottom six, place-holder, gap-fillers in Arron Asham, Mike Rupp, Donald Brashear, Derek Boogaard, Benoit Pouliot, Taylor Pyatt, Dominic Moore, Ruslan Fedotenko, Jason Ward, Ville Nieminen, Aaron Voros and Patrick Rissmiller.

In the big picture how does this contract make the Rangers better moving forward?

They just resigned something they already had for more money and added in a no movement clause.

Even if the cap goes up and they buyout Richards, that space is destined for some combination of Callahan, Girardi, Stralman, Boyle, Pyatt, Moore the RFAs, MDZ, Brassard, Kreider, J Moore, Zucc, Falk or their equivalent or lesser replacements.

It's going to be pretty much the same talent level as was here before. It's not like they have anything down on the farm who is going to come up and be a cheaper better replacement for these guys. On the UFA front it's the same thing, either overpay or pick from the leftovers.

Next off-season any increase in the cap is going to be absorbed by Stepan, Hagelin, Staal, Dorsett, Talbot or their replacements.

I like Lundqvist and all, but this signing does not improve the team beyond what they already had. Had he taken a discount then sure, that at least gives them the opportunity to improve somewhere else, not a guarantee, but a possibility.

Seems to me Lundqvist and the Rangers just pretty much guaranteed more of the same, somewhere in the mediocre range for the foreseeable future.
