Over-payment in my mind but there really wasn't another direction to go other than not signing him and doing a rebuild so it is what it is. Time to move on and get the team in front of him in order. Because as we've seen he can't do it alone.

Another lockout before this contract expires maybe means he'll be compliance buyout? Can't rule it out.

Based off conservative 5% cap growth (where it looks like it will be up nearly 10% next year), this is Lundqvist's caphit in today's (2013-2014) cap dollars:

(So you can wrap your head around what 8.5million means in the future, with the reference of what caphit in 2013 buys you)

Year 1: 8.09 million
Year 2: 7.70 million
Year 3: 7.34 million
Year 4: 6.99 million
Year 5: 6.66 million
Year 6: 6.34 million
Year 7: 6.04 million

I posted this in the "Salary Cap" thread, as well:

Under the most conservative of estimates, Lundqvist's caphit will go from 12.5% of the total cap to 8.5% during the length of the deal.

#NYR goals per playoff game during Torts' years: 1.57, 1.60, 2.15, 2.17. But yeah, it's all on Lundqvist that he hasn't won a Cup.

For reference, playoff GPG for each team to make it to the SCF since in the lockout:

2013: CHI, 2.78, BOS, 2.96
2012: LA, 2.85, NJ, 2.46
2011: BOS, 3.24, VAN, 2.32
2010: CHI, 3.54, PHI, 3.30
2009: PIT, 3.29, DET, 3.30
2008: DET: 3.27, PIT, 3.05
2007: ANA, 2.76, OTT, 2.95
2006: EDM, 2.92, CAR, 2.92

@AGrossRecord: Lundqvist: "To picture myself anywhere else, it was wrong, never an option."

Been saying it for months now.

Lundqvist has it pretty sweet in NY. He is the best athlete in the city, he sells his own merchandise, and he can go out in public without getting recognized most of the time. He is not going to find that anywhere else.

No, he wouldn't. He would not even come close to that figure. Nobody in their right mind is paying a goaltender that much money.

That's just simply wrong. Teams with the space would throw boatloads of cash at him, and if they don't they'd find a way. The Isles, Edmonton, Pittsburgh, Washington all come to mind.

He wants to win yes but money still talks.

He got this contract more because of his face and not the skills.
