hopefully they keep some contract space for some prospects. does Morgan Barron sign this summer or does he go the UFA after he finishes schools next year? with Rangers snagging these undrafted and drafted players that DONT SIGN with their drafted teams, imagine if they lost Barron to the Islanders or Bruins for example, that would suck.
I wouldn't be too worried about the contract spots, and Barron specifically. The Rangers believed in Barron and gave him a shot, he's not going to walk. There would have to be a major breakdown in the relationship for him to go UFA

And the contract spots, as of today they're at 46/50 available. By my counts, in the minors alone the team has 13 potential contracts that could come off the books in the summer. Some of these guys are RFAs and will be brought back, but there will be more than enough contract spots to sign the guys they need to.

Richards seems like a solid signing for Hartford. All these UDFA forward signings seem to point to guys such as Gropp, Leedahl and the like to go unqualified

i'd be more enthused regarding Khodorenko, Rueschoff, Richards, O'Leary, Whelan if we'd seen more from Newell, Elmer, N.Jones, Dmowski, McBride, Zerter-Gossage.
Cast a wide net and hope a couple pan out...
agree this means turnover at F wPack, the end w NYR/HWP for many of (RFAs) Gropp, Leedahl, Fontaine, and free-to-walk guys O'Regan, Beleskey, Fogarty, Nieves, Lettieri, N.Jones, Dmowski, McBride

Here is the Last Word on Hockey write up on Justin Richard from its list of top NCAA free agents:

Justin Richards, C, Minnesota-Duluth, 5’11” 190 lbs, Junior

Richards was named an alternate captain prior to his junior season and put up 14 goals and 25 points in 34 games for the Bulldogs. He was part of the back-to-back National Championship teams in his first two seasons, graduating into a big role in his sophomore campaign when he scored 32 points in 42 games. Richards plays a 200-foot game. He is responsible in the defensive end, plays the penalty kill and matches up against the other team’s top lines. Over the last two years, he’s also shown that he can use his strong skating, good vision and high-end hockey IQ to create points. He gets to open areas without the puck and makes smart passes with the puck.

no one knows anything about anything...anything said has been speculation about various potential outcomes of these season. and whether or not there is even a rest of this season

I can't see any way the season resumes. I'd be ecstatic if next season started on time. One amnesty buyout would be tremendous though.

IF Cap is reduced, the indication from insiders and pundits is that some sort of accommodation, such as 'Amnesty' Buy-Out (no Cap Hit)., will be authorized.
Doesn't mean NYR would use it, @GoAwayStaal is not NYR GM ...

I don't either but we've seen speculation of a training camp in june/july to resume the season and playoffs going to like sept/oct which is complete insanity in terms of impacting next season but its been thrown out there...

and of course the other unknown is what happens with the salary cap...if they go purely with a calculation based on HRR, the cap could drop big time but I'm sure the nhl & nhlpa could agree to negotiate a number based on projected revenue due to the unusual circumstances...there are so many possible ways it can go.

and an amnesty buyout will have virtually zero value to use. there will only be amnesty buyouts if the cap goes down and we'd use it to buyout a player in the final year of their contract to offset that drop.

So there'd be no value to buying out Smith, Staal or (not that I'd want to) Hank?

I'd rather trade Georgiev and let Hank play out the contract and then buy out Staal, who makes the team substantially worse by playing. Literally everyone is worse playing with Staal. He kills the team. You could find an upgrade on him for relatively cheap. Or you could try to acquire a good partner for Trouba and have New Guy-Lindgren-Smith/whoever.

Lundqvist saves you the most money, but I think removing Staal gives you the greatest opportunity to improve the team.

One other tidbit from Elliotte Friedman's latest 31 thoughts.

"13. Nashville and the Rangers gave Calgary a run for Connor Mackey."

Mackay was one of the top NCAA free agent defensemen -- Corey Pronman rated him the 27th best free agent including overseas players -- but it is interesting that the Rangers were pushing hard for another left handed defenseman. He will be 24 at the projected beginning of next season and presumably was looking for a situation where he had a good chance to play right away.

Anyone have intel re Jacob Golden, unsigned LHD drafted by Wild, now UFA?

You are correct in saying that you cast a wide net and hope one or more pan out. I would note, however, that there is a big difference between Khodorenko, Rueschoff and Richards, all of whom were on best NCAA free agent lists and Dmowski, McBride and Zerter-Gossage who were not considered serious prospects last year and were mostly signed at the Hartford level as extra bodies. I think O'Leary and Whelan fall more into the latter grouping.

I dont disagree, both my lists had both the NHL and AHL signees. Expectations vary.
Consensus may be that NJones(AHL deal) had stronger rookie pro season than Elmer(NHL deal) Just gotta hope you pick guys who make most of opportunity

the value in a amnesty buyout vs a regular buyout on a 1 year deal isn't that big a deal compared to other teams that can wipe out long term deals with potential recapture penalties....you have to also factor in the amount that the cap drops as well. if the season is canceled and they don't play any more regular season games or playoffs, the HRR could be 25% less than projections...what happens if the cap is $10 mil less than the projected total? then buying out lundqvist doesn't even cover that difference. we aren't gaining extra space to sign other players cause the cap went down. the cap will then go back up (to normal) the following year, but hank only had 1 year left so there is zero benefit long term.
