When Lundkvist, Miller and Kravtsov were first drafted, I was weirdly most excited about Lundkvist at the time from the highlights. He just seemed so in control and always making the smart play. At the time, he reminded me of an Anton Stralman type but obviously much smaller. Well, I finally got around to watching the full highlights package of Nils Lundkvist from this past season and he's progressed far beyond what got me so excited from his draft year videos. He's added so much more offense to what was already such a sound game.
His vision. His willingness to make high skilled offensive plays in a pro league is really something. And his wrist shot and slap shot from long range is a HUGE weapon. This is a bold statement but he might end up having the best long range shot on the Rangers after Panarin and Zibby. The amount of velocity and accuracy he has from long range is so unique. I'm having a hard time thinking of a Rangers D in my lifetime with his combo of accuracy and whip. He regularly beats goalies without a proper screen from above the circles or at the point. And several times it wasn't even because the goalies were out of position or still sliding across. He just whips it past them like they weren't expecting the puck to get on them that fast. I love all of our RDs at the moment, but Lundkvist's shot is something none of them have.
For those who think we should be trading Nils for a comparable LD... I really don't think that's wise. We will not get equal value for Nils at this point in a trade. He's likely smarter than just about any D we trade for. To the point where he could likely switch sides at some point. And that shot is going to be so lethal, not just on the PP but come playoff time. The fact that its hard and accurate from long range is just going to open up so much ice for others. Trouba has a heavy bomb but it's not super accurate. Foxy's shot is more accurate than powerful. His long range shot is really just about getting it through people to the net but not about beating the goalie cleanly. TDA is the closest re: shot but he tends to score most of his goals from slot or the circles.
Lastly, the more teams become aware of Lundkvist's shot, the more they will try to pressure him and get to him before he can use it. If his offensive game continues to progress, he will eventually feel confident enough (as he has in the SHL) to go around the pressuring forward. Normally players with that big of a shot from the point aren't agile enough to do that consistently. If Nils shows he can do that in the NHL his offensive game has a chance to something special. Okay, I'll calm the f down now.
