I think people make way too much out of positional depth for our prospects.

If your top organizational need is center, would you rather have Jared McCann (24th pick in the 2014 draft) or David Pastrnak (25th pick in the 2014 draft)?

How good a player is is just so much more significant than everything else, that nothing else really matters.

I agree for sure, in relation to all other positions than LD at least. These things are ever changing, but recently it has become at least problematic to play on the off side as a defender and it’s a fact that 70% of the players in Europe for example are lefties. On the bottom line that 70/30 tilt does have a big impact. If you only draft BPA risk are that there always will be a LD that makes slightly more sense than the RD.

But with that said — for the exact reason you point at you could never use some kind of quotation system. In a range of 30 picks just about anywhere in a draft except at the absolute top, there may be 1-2 guys that really becomes difference makers. You can’t be choosy when trying to find that kid. But it’s like when we draft Simon Kjellberg, it is a little annoying that someone very very meh like that is a LD.

When someone is a bit slow out of the gate we probably give them too much benefit of doubt but OTOH when someone takes of like Jones we probably underrate them as a rule.

I am not a mega Jones fan, but he should be rated higher than many many 1st round picks the last couple of years.

I don't know what the issue is with him for people? I get it he's undersized and has an uphill battle especially at his position. but say ok he gets blocked out, well he's still an asset. he's got a ton of skill, he's a great skater - maybe not a blazer in a straight line race but plenty fast - edges and short area quickness though are extremely good, by all accounts fantastic kid with the right kind of attitude and work ethic, great story..he's basically gone from a southeast US aaa program - not exactly a hotbed, to a NE prep, ushl, d1 college and making a world junior team as a 3rd rounder - year over year over year - those are huge leaps and that's before you mention he was extremely impressive in every jump. that is something no one really mentions, but thats a pretty big deal. if you know hockey you know it is not common and those are not small jumps to continually outperform. the thing that is really frustrating is how a lot of people are defining these kids by stats. ok so year two hasn't come out guns blazing putting up 3 pts a night...there's a lot that goes into that. team may be less talented, he may be trying to do too much & putting too much pressure on himself to do everything , may just be bad luck. its early in his soph year..he could easily close the year on a tear. he's got a lot of time, development isn't linear, and struggles can be tough to watch but can lead to breakthroughs. deep breaths.

The biggest thing i take from him and just generally observing the nhl draft the last few years, the most underappreciated and under scouted league in the world right now has to be the USHL. seems like more and more guys from there are showing up at colleges and really outperforming expectations post draft. not to mention when you get into those later rounds and there's maybe a longer road to the finished project, it's a really nice perk if they're going the college route to get the 4 years of observation and the practice / weight room time that offers the kids who need that. would also put the ajhl in there although my sense is you have a lot more depth in the USHL while the AJHL seems to be a bit more top heavy.

To me, Barron, Richards and Khodorenko are all intriguing prospects for different reasons.

Highest ceiling: Khodorenko
Closest to NHL ready: Richards
Most likely to lead these 3 in GP in 10 years: Barron

I honestly like each prospect for different reasons and think the Rangers have done really well to at least stack the deck

generally speaking this is a good way to look at it, but i really think people are sleeping on barron. khodorenko to me is the longest shot, i don't know if the skating is there, just comes with the most question marks. still a solid signing, you never know, but don't think odds are in his favor.

richards i really like, just not sure where or when he fits. but time will tell there, if he belongs we'll find room for him. i really, really like him coming from duluth. you can't underestimate how far it can go to have a foundation in a program with that culture. thats just a gutty, gritty program - they know how to work, they know how to play winning hockey, and they know how to embrace a role. i just don't remember him from watching any of their games...doesn't mean anything, he's not coming in to be a first liner. kinda par for the course for a duluth player....if he has the wheels, i'd think he has a pretty high probability of finding a home on the nhl roster at some point and if so will be a fan favorite

barron though is a whole different level from these two. he's a stud. maybe its where he was picked, or cornell not being as sexy as like no dak or minn, or that his stats don't jump off the page. but he was an ecac player of the year/hobey nominee, people noticed. he's a big kid but he can move better than he gets credit foor, he's got extremely underrated hockey sense and hands/shot. hes not a dangler but he can control a hard pass or grab a loose puck and get his shot off, he can drive through guys to get shots off, he has the sense and hands to take a pass and make a quick move in one motion to beat or open up a dman to get a clean look...just a lot of little things there that make a big difference as the levels climb and the ice shrinks and your margins tighten. being able to do those little things under control as quickly as he does can make all the difference. i would not be shocked to see him in the top 6 / on the pp. this year will be tough, a lot in front of him. he's a no doubt nhl'er though, we're going to see him this year and maybe a lot of him. as far as forwards i'd put him ahead of kravtsov...and i'm one of the people that still likes kravtsov, a lot. barron though will be something like an anders lee for us in terms of impact, maybe a bit more production, though probably more balanced in its distribution than long islands cy young candidate

No one has brought this up yet, but I expect Schneider to sign his ELC in the next 12 days. By doing so, the Rangers secure a double slide eligibility, making Schneider RFA in 2025

If he signs his ELC in 2021, it's not slide eligible at all, making him RFA in 2024 if they expect him to play in the AHL in 2021-22

CAN YOU EVEN SPELL?! OMG

I don't think it's a slam dunk it gets done. If it's good for the team, it normally means it's bad for the player. Easy for Schneider to say he's focused on the World Juniors now.

Sorry haven't kept up with the posts but has anyone mentioned Lauri Pajuniemi? Kid is on fire again after being second in Liiga last year in goals per game on barely 15 min of ice time. Feel like this guy gets overlooked. He seems to fitting the mold of a nice goal scorer.

I'd be a little shocked if he signs his ELC in the middle of the WJCs...

It's actually good for Schneider as he gets paid his signing bonus immediately

$92,500

Idk how to post IG stories on here...But K’Andre’s on the odr with Laff got me jazzed up for the season. Wonder where they are living with that nice rink in their backyard

If you look at the short video the Rangers did on him--Drury talks about Lauri improving on his overall game. He'll have to do that to have a chance with the Rangers. The Rangers have top end talent--it's good to add more offense but their real need is to develop forwards who can take on roles apart from strictly offensive.

Haha no worries, you might have been thinking of Robertson who likely would have made it but been the odd man out in the roster if he didn't get Covid.
Yeah was thinking Robertson who wasn't having a great camp and then had health issues and was cut.
It's great for Schneider, as an 18 year old to make the team and will probably be in the top 4

like the matchups he’ll be facing playing behind the byram drysdale pairing. him and harley together will be a handful physically for a lot of teams, particularly teams built on speed like the US who only have one or two forwards with size. losing beecher down the middle hurts.

Jones had an assist and 3 shots.

Rykov is playing the rest of the KHL season, per Brooks. If he comes over at all it may be the last time we see him, per me.

For the record, Schneider turned 19 three months ago and is one of the oldest players in his draft class.
