Lindgren. It has to be the guy who has established himself as a dependable 5/6 with maybe a bit more upside. The rest, you're hoping for second pair, but they may not even make it.

Add Huska.

Rykov. Think his floor is Lindgren, and ceiling is Top 4. I think that he'd already be on the team logging major minutes were it not for his injury.

Barron. I think he has (correctly) been profiled as a guy who has a very achievable floor of a 3rd liner – and so that's how he's become solidified in people's minds.

But I think his ceiling is a ~25 goal scoring, 2-way, big bodied winger, which would obviously be a great asset for this team.

Add Henriksson.

Ryan Lindgren's floor is also Ryan Lindgren, no? I mean I know I'm being cute, but we know what Ryan Lindgren is, and that's what we watch every night. But then we need to remind ourselves that he's 21 and has only played 40 NHL games. It seems unfair to me to talk about Lindgren as if he's a finished product that can't get any better. I mean, he's a year younger than Rykov.

I feel like Lindgren is in this weird place where everyone likes him and generally appreciates what he does but has also decided that despite not even really approaching his prime, he's already as good as he's going to get.

Still think Hajek has the higher ceiling over Lindgren, but I do like Lindgren's game a lot recently. He's gotten a lot better at defending 1v1 and he's been pretty smart about how he's been moving the puck out of the zone lately.

Add Henriksson

I've just never been a fan of his. Don't really see him as ever topping out more than a bottom pairing Dman on a decent team. Rykov I think has higher upside

Lindgren based on NHL performance and I think there is #4 upside as a lockdown guy.

Add Pajuniemi. One of the top goal scorers in LIIGA at a young age.

He’s gonna be a steady third pairing defensive defenseman — which he already is. He might get better within that capacity, sure, but not enough to jump to 2LD or better.

Went with Hajek. Add Reunanen. I think Pajuniemi, Huska and Henriksson are close but I think right now, Tarmo is the better prospect.

I had to think about this one a bit, but I ended up going with Lindgren. I think the 1/2/3/4/5/6 defenseman classification misses a lot of nuance that matters. I've seen a few people make the argument that a team needs a few all-star / generational players to win the cup like the Penguins, but I'd argue that just as many of the multiple cup winners (Blackhawks, Kings, Devils) have been really great defensive teams. I think defensive value is really important. Lindgren isn't going to run a power play, but he's already doing a solid job matching up against 2nd and 3rd line forwards at age 21. If he ends up being able to neutralize another team's 2nd line, why is the value of that different than the value of a 2nd line forward? The Bruins (who drafted Lindgren) only have 1 defenseman on pace to score more than 30 points and they are one of the best teams in the league.

I guess Keane is next for me. He's been just as good as Rykov in Hartford and is 2 years younger. He's taken the same development arc as Hajek and has been substantially better along the way:

Age 18: Keane scored 0.7 PPG and won the OHL's best defensive defenseman award compared to 0.4 PPG and no awards for Hajek
Age 19: Keane and Hajek both scored 0.6 ppg
Age 20: Keane is an AHL all-star, and has scored 0.6 ppg, plays on the power play and takes top 4 defensive matchups. Hajek scored less than 0.1 ppg, which is worse than Marc Staal has ever done in the NHL, and generally struggled in the AHL.

Hajek does have NHL experience that Keane doesn't, but if you go by Corsi Hajek's been the 4th worst player in the entire NHL (over 20 games). That's more of a negative than a positive to me.

Add Reunanen, then Pajuniemi. Pajuniemi's having a better season, but I believe in Reunanen's skillset enough to stick with him for now.

Joey Keane is going to be one of those guys who doesn't crack the top-10, but has a reasonable chance to play more than 10 years in the NHL and potentially has a career that surpasses at least half-a-dozen guys ranked ahead of him.

I continue to believe he might be out best "value" prospect when considering where he was taken, what's he done (and continues to do), and what he has the potential to do in the future.

The kid is one of the younger players in the NHL, and was just named an all-star in his professional season.

If this kid were taken 40th overall in 2017, and not 88th overall in 2018 as an over-ager, and if we weren't stacked at RD, I think we'd be talking about him a lot more.
