Voted Bigras even though I don't think he's on the Ranger's long term plans. Turns 24 next month and hasn't even been invited up for a cup of coffee with the Rangers in 2 years.

Plus like I stated before, the lack of AHL coverage is close to absolutely nothing. I really barely have any idea how well our guys are doing down there aside from stat watching. Years ago we would have updates all the time how our guys were doing down there.

Does anyone know who the top pair is on the Pack?

I voted Olof Lindbom. I want to believe in him. He is young and we have Shesty, but he can be our no.1 in 5 or 6 years.

Maybe, but he hasn't shown a lick of anything this season. He'll be at the bottom of my personal list until he starts proving himself.

Huska
add Virta or Day
(but at this point, it is getting hard (for me) to separate - could just as likely suggest
Wall, Ronning, Crawley, Gilmour, Fogarty, Hughes, Gropp, OGara, even Halverson, who is still just 22, but seems stale as was drafted in '14 ...)
IF these 11 guys are 27 thru 37,
NYR really has been doing something right ...

I've watched maybe 1/3rd of the pack games this year, including 3 of the last 4. They've switched the D around, so it's tough to say who the top pair is, but Bigras and Gilmour are probably the two who play the most. In my opinion:

- Bigras is solid and reliable in both ends, but nothing special. He might be able to hold his own on a bottom pair in the NHL
- Gilmour is really dynamic and probably our most talented / best offensive player at this point. He's a great skater, obviously, but is also sure-handed with the puck and good at manipulating / reading defenders to create chances. It's pretty easy to see why he was the guy who got picked for the All-Star team. He looks like he could be an impact offensive player in the NHL, but he is an incredibly careless player in the defensive zone. It seems like he makes a careless play that leads to a goal against us at least once a game.
- Hajek is solid defensively and skates very well, but he really struggles to move the puck / read the game with the puck on his stick, in my opinion. I've tried to pay closer attention to it the last few games and can only think of one time when he's had the puck in our defensive zone and made a pass that led to us having control in the other team's defensive zone. He has turned it over / given up control to the other team multiple times every game. There have been a couple times where he's had the puck in our defensive zone without anyone pressuring him and has decided to just make a sprint for the red line and dump the puck. One time he didn't get the red line and just iced it. Once he starts skating with the puck, it doesn't seem like he is able to keep his head up and read the defense or move the puck. He has had one or two plays when he was able to beat a defender and created a scoring chance, but most of the time, he just ends up giving the puck back to the other team. He had a turnover that led to Charlotte's 2nd goal in the last game. In terms of handling the puck, he looks worse to me in the AHL than Staal looks in the NHL. I hope it is an issue that will improve as he develops over time. I know others disagree with me, and I hope I'm wrong, but I think we are too high on him
- Lindgren looks better than Hajek to me and I can see why they called him up. He's not perfect on defense (he got dangled pretty bad by Paul Carey on his 3rd goal in Bruins game) but he's solid. He does not do a lot offensively, but he can make outlet passes, and he's made a few plays that show he has some offensive skill, even if he doesn't use it much.
- Day looks much better to me since he's come back from the ECHL. He might have the best combination of skating and physicality on the team, he rushes the puck well (obviously) and he generally seems to be able to make smart plays with the puck on his stick. He's made a few smart plays in the offensive zone that show the ability to read the game. He gets the easiest minutes on the team and still has a lot of development left, but I could see him getting more responsibility on the team over time and I wouldn't give up hope on him yet.
- O'Gara is a perfectly fine AHL'er, but he doesn't do anything in the AHL that would get you about more excited about his NHL prospects than his stint in the NHL last year did.

It has changed from time-to-time, but in most of the games I have seen it has appeared to be Bigras-O'Gara. I've never seen TOI figures so I can't say with certainty that they get the most minutes, but they're usually a pair and seem to be out there the most.

Great post. Why don't you move it to the Wolfpack page so more people can see it?

This is the kind of stuff I come to hfboards for. Really solid post, and it gives me an idea of what our AHL defensemen look like. Thank you.
