Oof. Gotta say, players 26-30 really feel more like our HMs.

of the choices available, I went with Fontaine, Elmer, and Newell. All guys I had some hope for as recently as last off-season, but all of whom will need to rebound a la Reunanen to gain relevance once more.

Went Fontaine, Hughes, and Gropp

Hughes clearly has time on his side. Most of these other guys do not. They are older players and have less time to develop into NHLers. At least Hughes has 3 more NCAA seasons to get things going his way.

Fontaine feels like he could be a 4th liner at most, but that is still valuable. Unfortunately got injured this season. Still think there is a chance.

Gropp is the best of the rest. Younger than Newell and better in the AHL than him. Honestly, he could get qualifying offer for next season, but would not shock me if he is not given one. Newell would have been my other vote since it seems like he's doing okay in Hartford, but he's also 24 now. Next season is pretty much now or never for a guy like him. Feels like a guy primed to head to Europe after his ELC is done.

Elmer is a rookie out of junior, who started the season at age 20.
You think his first few months as a pro is enough sample size that he has made himself irrelevant? That seems premature to me ...

No, I was going off of his ridiculous goal scoring streak in juniors (which granted came riding shotgun with a top prospect).

I'm not claiming any of these guys have much longterm upside. Like I said, I'd have ranked 15-20 as the HMS. Just giving my rationale for the three I did choose.
