Prospect Info: Rangers Prospect Poll: #22

D John Gilmour won the AHL All Star skating competition yesterday so he won round 21 today. C Adam Tambellini is added to the poll.

WHO IS A PROSPECT:

SKATER PROSPECT: A player 24 or younger with 50 or fewer NHL games.

GOALIE PROSPECT: A player 25 or younger with 25 or fewer NHL games.

EXCEPTION 1: If a player completed the required 50/25 games, but is still not regarded as an NHL regular because he's shuffling between the NHL and the AHL, he could still be a prospect as long as he's 24 or younger and if agreed upon by most people here.

EXCEPTION 2: A player who is no older than 25 years old at the time of the vote and is a borderline NHLer could still count if agreed upon by most people here.

That's definitely not why he got my vote.

That and the article saying he improved this year. Gilmour is an abortion. He can skate, but that's it. He improved defensively, but can't defend well enough for the NHL, in part because he'll be physically overmatched and doesn't know how to overcome his size disadvantage. This would be ok if he were great offensively, but he can't stickhandle well enough for the NHL either. He can transport the puck in mid-ice using his speed, but he's not creative offensively and bad defensively. Then he causes turnovers like nobody else in Hartford. He thinks he can transport the puck, but when he's challenged by the defender, he's more likely to cough it up than to keep it. At least when a forward chokes up the puck, someone is behind him to help out the goalie. With Gilmour, it leads to a breakaway or a great chance for the other team. Gilmour won't be a regular NHLer. If he's a late bloomer (he's turning 25 in May), maybe he improves enough to become a #7 defenseman on a team with depth issues, but his style of play that combines offensive non-creativeness with turnovers will make him hated by fans.

He's ranked as the 21st prospect in a prospect pool that's far from the deepest in the league. Noone is saying he's going to be an NHLer, but i think he's got enough of a shot at being an NHLer for NYR that i'd rank him around #20 in our prospect pool. Personally i think you're underrating Gilmours upside aswell, won't get too deep into that though since it's been clear for quite a while that we don't look at hockey the same way.

There's 8 maybe 9 players in our prospect pool i feel strongly about that they'll reach 200 games in this league, so if being a regular NHLer is a reason why someone can't be voted #21 then how did we vote anyone for #12 or #16?

Edit: When you can skate like Gilmour and put up points like he's doing this season in his 2nd AHL year, then you have NHL upside... He certainly has big flaws but it's his 2nd pro season so there's definitely a chance he can work enough on those flaws to make it, odds are against him but the odds are against anyone we could vote for so....

Add Pedrie. If you compare by age, Pedrie outscored Gilmour at the same age in college, and slightly outscoring Gilmour in the AHL as a rookie at the same age as when Gilmour was a rookie last year. Not as fast, but doesn't turn over the puck as much. Not only is Pedrie a rookie, but he played at a low level until a couple of seasons ago, so his progress may have been a bit delayed. I'd like to see what he does next season in Hartford before totally writing him off.

Not going to show much love for Jensen because he's about to turn 25 in a few weeks and hasn't done much in his career so far. The smart thing for him would be to stay in the KHL the rest of his career. Being a first liner in a high quality league with large stadiums while living in Helsinki is not the worst thing in the world (see below). Much better than traveling by bus from Hartford to Worchester overnight.
