First tie-breaker as they were only separated by only 2 votes. The runner-up of this will not automatically receive the #18 spot as there were several choices close to each other.

Went with Vierling for the perceived upside.

I feel like even coming in under his full potential still has challenging for a bottom six role as a smart two-way type.

If we hadn't brought in so many bottom 6 grinders this offseason I would be very excited to see if Richards could claim the 4C spot in camp. Drury minus the offense.

Maybe he still can if he shows well in preseason while pushing Rooney to wing.

Richards has a legit shot to challenge Rooney coming into this camp.

Where he probably loses votes in a prospect pool is that once he fits the fourth line, that's probably more or less where he stays.

Typically, unless a kid looks like a unique or particularly outstanding fourth line player, they usually slide a little further on these lists because of the perceived potential of other candidates.

But Richards is definitely a kid on the cusp of making himself an NHL player.

I agree Richards may be queued to replace Rooney,
I think depending on how things go, Rooney could be rented, to a contender, when the right offer comes

choice between a lotto ticket and a savings bond ...
I kinda don't get how no one (NYR, his 'advisor') didn't find a team for Vierling last year ...

Our ECHL affiliate (Maine Mariners) opting out of the season didn't help things. Our spots in Hartford were limited at center with the arrival of Khodorenko, Richards and Barron on top of what was already there.

Skinner played for the Utah Grizzlies but that loan was initiated by the Grizzlies who wanted Skinner, rather than the Rangers sending him there. I guess for Vierling, there wasn't enough interest.

I suspect he may have himself chosen not to play. I have no basis for this other than the fact that almost all the other guys from his draft found somewhere to play, whether overseas or in the minors. It's just odd--he was a mid round pick but one with talent, it's hard to believe no one had a spot for him.

thanks guys - this week i had re-watched some his highlight reels on YouTube, and you'd think he'd have drawn interest
obvi they were highlight reels, but he shows skill and energy and instincts
if he worked on conditioning, skating ands skills, and plays the key role for Barrie predicted before last season, lots of promise there
