initial reaction was "WOAH! interesting"
I'm feeling optimistic about this but given where we were, we have to get better.
Re: LD getting better. We probably have to ride out one more year of Staal and Smith unless either of them get bought out.
Optimistic for Miller next season. JD said he was fantastic in pre-bubble training.
Probably another year before we see another player step in for the 3rd LD slot.

This is true and this is why I've been a proponent of acquiring some bottom 6 muscle (particularly at center). It would help the transition game Quinn likes to play immensely if we have centers who are fast enough and defensively responsible enough to drop into the middle to pick up the gap the defense creates when doing this.

Zibanejad is probably the only one who frequently provides good support on the opponent's counter rush to break up plays. Chytil can loop around and provide a good outlet as well at times. Strome is pretty lousy defensively and don't even get me started on Howden.

This move along with booting Staal will improve our defense pretty significantly. I wouldn't expect to be a top 5 defensive team in the league, but they don't need to be that, not yet.

Of all the possible names that have been thrown around as possible adds for the C position, Dvorak is the one I like the most due to age/contract/fit/potential cost in assets. I don't think you need a power body at that position, it would be nice, but its hardly a necessity.

I've said it before, but the hardest to find/acquire components to building a contender are already here. Some of them need a little bit of time, but we have them in our possession. The muscle we need is really on the wings, both in the top and bottom 6. If Lemieux decides to focus more on playing hockey than the other shenanigans, he's got the skill set to help here on the bottom 2 lines.

I'd still look to add 2 of these guys for each group. I suppose that number could be as low as 1 if they keep Fast, but it would be a focus of mine to get someone to take the place of Buchnevich who can play that game while not being horrible everywhere else.

Watching these playoffs makes me realize he probably won't be available but Alex Tuch comes to mind as this type of player.

Marc Staal: Coach Martin, why am I always in the press box?

Unless there are money issues involved, I have a hard time imagining Arizona parting with Dvorak (he's their #1 center) or Vegas parting with Tuch (is he RFA or something?) who has looked phenominal in the playoffs. I still can't understand how Florida handed them both Smith and JAM, Anaheim delivered Theodore to them (even back then, I thought he'd be better than Manson), and MIN handed them Tuch and Haula to not select Dumba IIRC because they wanted to protect Brodin and Spurgeon. pretty wacky in hindsight. pretty wacky when it all went down too but I digress.

Not so much anymore. It's the only part of his game that doesn't completely suck but it's gone from massive strength to just average, and it's easily combated by just chipping the puck by him and creating a foot race that he will usually lose and if he does get to the puck first, he's likely to turn it over.

OTOH, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Brendan Smith ends up looking like a stud. Entry break ups are his jam.
B Smith has a new life coach

There’s something to be said for giving Quinn this kind of assistant. An inexperienced head coach who was badly out coached in his first playoff series and whose team played abysmal defense, now gets an extremely well seasoned assistant coach who can put together a competent defense.

Cant knock this hire one bit. I like it a lot.

Absolutely nothing not to like about this

I hope Martin can become something of a mentor for Quinn, and a stabilizing presence for the players. I get the sense that at this stage in his life, Martin is satisfied in an assistant capacity and not auditioning for a head coaching role.

Both have money issues. One thing about Arizona contracts is that unlike many teams, their contracts have backloaded cash. I agree that Dvorak is unlikely to be traded but this situation is very fluid and there may be a new GM here soon. As for Vegas, they definitely have cap issues for next year especially if they want to keep Lehner.

Arizona has had to let assistant coaches go because of money issues, so they definitely exist.

The question for them is what do they want to do? Are they just trying to slash payroll? Then yeah, they probably try to move out some of the older guys who have 1-2 years left on their contracts for what ever they can get.

Are they going to tear it down and start over? In that case, they may be better served moving someone like Dvorak. Their vets won't return anything substantial, they have no draft picks for the next 2 years and by the time they're realistically be ready to do anything substantial (in their case, it would be closer to 5-7 years than 3-4) They'd be looking at the end of his deal with his best hockey likely behind him.

I imagine OEL is going to be moved this offseason (Buffalo seems like a natural fit and they have the 8th OA which could be used as part of the return.) They have some time to figure it out though I guess.
