Larry Brooks: Rangers Have Contacted Anders Nilsson

It's amazing we can attract the best back ups, love it

Not sure it's amazing. The Rangers are an attractive destination. You back up a legend (and in Nilsson's case, fellow countryman), work with Benny, know you'll get playing time because of Hank's age, and the Rangers have a history of turning back ups into guys that teams can feel good starting (Raanta, Talbot).

The deal I would do (but the Isles probably won't) is:

Marc Staal 5.7 mill

for

Jaroslav Halak 5 mill

The Islanders have mishandled him. He is still a capable NHL player, whether it be a B starter or A backup. With that said, too much money for a backup.

I look at him as free in that deal since we would be dumping 3 years of Staal at 5.7

I understand that, but essentially it only saves NYR about $700K, when they could roughly save $4M by wasting Staal's contract somewhere else and signing a backup at a cheaper rate.

Staal's contract will be hard to move, however, without retaining any cap.

If the Isles would do my deal it would be a no brainer for us even if Halak never played a game. We would save way more than $700k. We would trade 4 years for 1 year.

The Isles just made a move where they gave up assets for cap space. Doubt they'd be interested in a move that recommits them to a bad deal.

I agree. Its what I would like not what the Isles would like. They would fear we would take that cap room and sign Tavares so no way they would do it.

Nilsson was the best goalie BUF had last year.

Timmy Murray banked hard on Lehner, a guy that never shows up to camp in prime shape.

Nilsson would be the best on the market.

Would be happy with Smith back.
