Confirmed with Link: Rangers extend D Will Borgen

This is a fine deal on the surface. We can complain that the AAV is slightly too high or the term is slightly too long, but it seems like that is said for every contract signing. It’s not a bargain, but it’s not an anchor either. It’s just fine.

I’m more concerned with what this means for Schneider. If this deal means that Schneider is likely getting moved for veteran help, then this contract is a disaster. But if both Borgen and Schneider are in the long term plans, as Vince said, then I’ll stick to my “fine” take.

Rangers have already tinkered with Schneider on the left side and we've heard from basically everyone who is reputable that they've said no to trading him. Vince saying what he said is not far fetched.

I do think this makes Mancini expendable though.

The trade protection is a non-factor. There's little chance we are going to trade him next season. After that, the protection drops to 15 teams, then 10, then 6, then none.
awesome - I didnt know the details

He is already around 2.75 so I figured 3.75 but to lock up for 5 years at 4 per isn't a big difference especially with cap going up. If he plays like he has recently than it seems fair. Will all depend on his play. 4 mill deals wont be hard to move if needed in future.
yup agreed - people just love to complain i guess. main boards is a cesspool of people saying its one of the worst contracts in the league lol

Borgen has fit in really well, especially with K’Andre. They’re a legit good pair. If you’re re-signing Key then why not bring back the partner who looks like he fixed him?

6’3 and a right shot. Really strong skater, good first pass, solid physical defender. With him and Key together, with their size and length, they have the potential to be an eraser pair.

Fair contract for Borgen. If he stays throughout it, he can slide down to the third pair. 4.1 cap hit is peanuts when the cap is gonna be 105 in 2 years. 97 next year has been alluded to by the big reporters.

Schneider looks great on the left earlier this year.

Schneider-Fox
Miller-Borgen

Is a legitimately solid top 4. We had to watch Trouba defend in this role the last 5 years, Borgen is better than Trouba and is signed for half the cap hit.

I think it’s dumb to not think that’s part of his motivation. And can we stop fellating Drury for taking 4 years to get rid of Goodrow? That’s not admitting a mistake, that’s just putzing around until it looks like a cap casualty. Admitting it was stupid would’ve been ripping off the band aid after year one

He did that with Nemeth. And Goodrow until his final season was overpaid but a useful player.

While giving away multiple 2nds to dump Nemeth.

Sure, but also Nemeth fell off the face of the earth with the Rangers. He was better than what he showed pre-Rangers from all accounts. At least we got a taste of how Borgen looks next to Miller.

A tad more than I thought he’d get, but I’m also not used to living in a world where the NHL salary cap will he close to $100M. I still think they’re going to need one more higher-end piece to the defense, but I like the makeup. Good skaters, length, and can make an easy first pass or carry the puck.

The onus will be on upgrading the forwards long term, but there’s good pieces in place.

No bullshit, I don’t know why teams don’t lock up guys like Edstrom or Rempe to 8 year deals at like $1m per season. Guaranteed money for them and low cap hit for the team. That’s another subject though…
It’s a pretty straight forward explanation imo. It makes little sense for the player.

These guys get to the top of their profession betting on themselves. And once they reach it, they’re going to go the safe route contract wise? Makes no sense

Colton Scissons is the only guy I can think of that did this. But it’s few and far between

As I mentioned in my first post, I like this deal. I think it’s fair money for the 4/5 spot, with the cap projections for the future especially. Ideally I would like Schneider to pass him as he matures, or simply for Borgen to be on the third pair when it’s truly contention time, but for now this is honestly the perfect contract. I will say, in response to some of the other comments here, Vaakanainen has not been neatly as positive as Borgen, and I GENUINELY think you are better served with him not being in your regular top-six. I could care less whether he is brought back or not, but I definitely don’t want him penciled as more than 6/7. Borgen filling on the second pair until it’s time to genuinely push for the Cup is fine. Vaakanainen is a barely 6, whether you’re competing or not. It’s probably partially a credit to Schneider that the pair has been very solid.

Seems slightly higher than expected but not by much. I also don’t feel comfortable with the 5th year and trade protection. Seems like we are always compromising on everything.

I like the player and think he has been one of our better defensive man. But he has some seasons were he hasn’t played that well.

Nervous about this deal slightly

and at the end of the day he's an NHL quality defenceman who's slightly overpaid. Worst case scenario is in 2-3 years time we move him to a team who needs to get to the floor as the cap keeps rising and can't attract UFAs

I think it’s fine, Mancini didn’t look close when up here, Emery is going to take years, Fortescue should start in Hartford, and has no offense to his game either.

Would be nice to acquire/draft a dman that has some offense in his game eventually though.
