Interesting how the original blurb in 32 thoughts was Calgary didn't make sense with Dustin Wolf but NYR makes sense.
Doesn't make too much sense either as we have a good young goalie, Dylan Garand, in the AHL. But at least we don't need to worry about wasting a draft pick on a goalie this year I guess.

Friedman did mention Wolf, but he also mentioned Calgary having a reserve list goalie (Arseni Sergeev) in the same age range as Tung; Coincidentally Sergeev was in net for Penn State on the other end of the ice when Tung/UConn were eliminated. Sometimes that's more of the consideration. If Calgary were to sign Sergeev, Tung might find himself in the ECHL instead of the AHL if Devin Cooley isn't promoted to the NHL.

(Edit: Calgary also signed Notre Dame goalie Owen Say a couple weeks ago.)

Realistically most NCAA goalies are going to need a couple seasons of AHL time before they even sniff at an NHL backup gig. I still occasionally laugh when I think of the poster who was sure Dryden McKay was going to step directly into the NHL.

The Rangers possibly have more openings. Louis Domingue is UFA. Dylan Garand is RFA. Tayln Boyko is RFA and played mostly in the ECHL. Hugo Ollas is signed for another year but spent most of this season in the ECHL. Maybe the Rangers could give Tung some assurances that he'd have the inside track to the #4 spot?

Even though Garand and Sergeev are both 2002 born, Garand is already finishing his ELC while Sergeev/Tung would be starting theirs. So in a convoluted way there'd be slightly less direct competition.

Plus the Rangers AHL team being in Hartford might have offered some fringe benefit being close to UConn. Not sure if Tung is going to continue with classes or made some close friends in his single season with the Huskies.

Kid just needs to play wherever he signed. He turns 22 in November. Played 15 games for UConn this season, 38 in the BCHL in 23/24 and just 14 games in 22/23 in various leagues. Kind of surprised to see him leave college so quickly.

But, if he felt NYR offered a good opportunity to get the coaching, so be it. Best of luck to the kid.

I guess the idea is where is a place you can grow and develop into a guy who plays NHL games a)the fastest, and b)with the most regularity. I see a way to get into the show quickly with the NYR but he will, almost certainly, never be the starter there.

respectfully disagree, Garand is waiver required in a year, this kid is gonna need multiple minors' seasons

interesting also tho, re the other young G's - in that Boyko will be RFA while Ollas has another year signed
Boyko, Garand, Ollas all 22 - Tung will be 22 in Nov'25
