A guy with a bass
Extremely sad day, even if it is best for the team.
I would (resent maybe a bit of a strong word here). If he wanted to truly retire or retire from the NHL to go back to play in Sweden I'm sure the Rangers would find a way to compensate him for the lost $3m over time with interest in a consultants or some other front office capacity. We could almost guarantee that Hank's desire to continue his NHL career and lack of trade options is what led to the buyout scenario.
I dunno. After all, he could've just said that he was retiring. And Meehan very specifically said something to the effect that they were focused on the end with the Rangers and hadn't really thought about next steps yet...With multiple outlets reporting that he and the team had mutually worked this out, there's a sliver of a chance that he really is retiring and gets to keep his money.
End of an era. Henrik deserves mention with the greatest Rangers of all times. If not the greatest.Teared up reading this. It really sucks. I know it is the best thing for the Rangers but damn.
Agreed. Sometimes business has no heart.Extremely sad day, even if it is best for the team.
Yes it’s not an ideal sendoff but it’s for the best. The timing of this occurring when it did sucks. He deserved a sending off.
PIT was down in Game 7, but with 3-4 minutes to go, the Penguins resigned themselves to defeat. With time left. They knew. The force of will that Henrik Lundqvist was for those three games, broke the will of an entire team. One with Sidney Crosby, and Evgeni Malkin on them. That doesn't happen with any man, it takes a very special force of nature for that to happen.
Gomez, Drury, Richards, St Louis, Redden, Dan Boyle, Shattenkirk
The list of supposedly great players or players who pretty much completely failed here during Hanks tenure. Some of them had moments.
None of them ever came CLOSE to delivering what their contracts or trades promised. None of them ever even sniffed being consistently elite.
Dumping Jagr, stralman, drafting McI, all the terrible contracts, all the failure to properly scout NHLers, all the awful trades for current NHLers.
NYR failed hank miserably.
He's not just on the MT Rushmore for the NYR. He's on it for all goalies and all NY sports players ever.
His focus, reaction time, athleticism, calm and compete level night in and night out were simply on another level. He's going to never be looked at the way he should bc of this piece of shit team failing to put together a playoff caliber roster for all but maybe 4 years of his career ( And even then never once putting together a legit cup winner. He had to elevate every single team he was on well beyond anything they should've been capable of.)
With a GOOD goalie we're not lamenting 2nd round, ECF and SCF losses. We're lamenting the fact that we've won 1 or 2 playoff rounds since the late 90s. We're lamenting only making the playoffs 3 or 4 times in 15 years
But we had one of the best of all time. So instead we get to wonder about constant runs in the POs that just fell short, 3 ECF appearances and a SCF appearance.
Some of us get to talk like complete clowns, blaming Hank for not bringing home the cup. Without him, those same people would've prob given up on the NHL altogether, frustrated bc the team always sucks.
It will take someone at Crosby level for this organization to see an individual player better than what hank was.
He defined an entire generation of hockey fans. 15 years. If you were born in 98-2004 then by the time you actually were old enough to really appreciate hockey you have literally known nothing but Hank's absolute mastery at the position. This ENTIRE millenium is Hank so far.
No other way I can pay homageright on ur chin like a lundqvist mask
PIT resigned to defeat???
That's weird, I seem to remember Lundqvist absolutely being peppered with high danger chances right up until the final whistle.
I don't think the buyout is going to mean anything unless Henrik wins a Cup next season (with Colorado, maybe). The Rangers basically tossed Henrik to the curb during last season. They sat him for almost a month in February and during that 13 game stretch played Georgie 3 games in a row - twice! If Igor had been healthy, he wouldn't have even played in the return from the pause. The buyout is less risky than trading the player. With a buyout the team can just shrug their shoulders and say they couldn't afford to keep him. This is so weird. When Sather traded Leetch, that was like top 5 most heartbreaking days or my life and I swore I would never forgive him for that.
Idk if that was just because I was 14 years old and it was hormones and that was the first true heartbreak I had ever experienced and now as a 30 year old I'm so jaded that I don't even care anymore, but the only thought is that I have immense respect for Gorton for having the balls to pull this off.
If he doesnt bring a Cup to NY his legacy will be "the guy who bought out the best player in franchise history".

And while we're talking about cap management, just remember Gorts and the rest of the Rangers brass have almost $13M in dead cap money on our books for 20-21 season between Girardi, Spooner, Shattenkirk and Lundqvist.
He could go many places to be a cheap backup but I think the reality is he would want a chance to be the starter and win a Cup.Vegas if they move Fleury and he is willing to sign there for the bare minimum as a 1b to Lehner who really has never proven he is capable of being a full time starter.

...true....unless another goalie gets hurt...or other moves were made.$13m in dead space is less than the $16m in dead space they would have had with him sitting in the pressbox.
The Rangers did not need to play Georgie 3 games in a row, twice, during that stretch. Georgie lost the 3rd game in 4 nights both times.First, I would love to see Hank in Colorado but chances are very slim with amount of younger quality goalies out there to be had. As far as last year the Rangers played the best goalie at the time which is what they SHOULD do regardless of history and cap numbers. The dead money space is not going to hamstring decisions this year as much as people think and we basically have a windfall after next season when we should just be ready to add a missing piece or two for a real run and not just making the playoffs.
