Really the issue with the kicking motion rule is it is yet another instance in the game where the call is subjective. Here's a solution, if the blade leaves the ice=kick, if it doesn't= goal allowed.

Tierney's foot leaves the ice on the one allowed against us.

Two games a week is killing them, they're fading fast in the second half. Campbell desperately needs some rest.

2nd/3rd D pair were awful. But Sandin, Liljegren, Dermott are all number 6s right now asked to play higher up than capable, Biega an AHLer. We were always going to leak chances tonight.

4th line useless, Spezza and Simmonds are at a point where both need to be rotated in and out to stay fresh. Nothing needs to be said about Clifford.

Matthews goal should've stood, seen worse "kicks" that have counted this season.
Tavares cap hit vs production angers me.

We had one against us earlier this year that was far more egregious
What a joke this league's officials are.

I'm sorry, with complete honesty, I just don't see it at all. Tierney literally swings his leg towards the puck and his skate leaves the ice. Zero chance that puck would've gone towards the net had Tierney not swung at it.

no he redirects the shot it. Matthews literally toe punted the puck in LMAO. It’s not even close. I understand your pissed about it, but Tiereny’s goal is a good redirect. Foot was firm, redirects the puck and does not kick it. You can guide your foot forward in a redirect as long as you hold that pivot and foot position which tiereny did. That’s the difference

Its pisses me off that majority of the goals were because of basic failed dzone coverage
And lily being soft as f*** with the puck a few feet from the blue line.

Shit you learn as a kid you would expect pros would be programmed to never let happen multpile times in a game

I think you need to look at dangling Holl and Dermott for trades with a sweetener that is not a first round pick to try and get something done for a top 4 guy who's SOLID defensively. A package with them together and something smaller might be able to get something back that's helpful.

Adding another defenseman does make sense at this stage. Someone able to handle the tough forechecking and play a physical game

The offense is pretty good overall, though I feel Matthews becomes way too finesse oriented with Marner. When you give him a couple skill and scrappy players (Bunting/Kase) he plays more simple and physically dominant

The teams identity must be on the backend. I get that they need to develop their young D Men, but, they need to do so slowly. Furthermore, from top to bottom they need to be solid and physical.

Solidify the top four, they have the assets and a bit of Cap Space now. To me, this game was always going to be tough to win on the road without their shutdown pairing, no matter how inconsistent they have been.

Muzzin has 63% defensive zone starts. There is a reason he had the tough assignments.

They need a big body upfront who can play and a big body at the back who can play

Chariot and Kane will do the trick but we are too much of a nice organization for that

I rather have Joey Anderson instead of Clifford.

Soup has made this D looked much better than what we are. Kind of McDavid made Oilers offense look much what they are

Now they can't sustain that play and both are being exposed

On the Tierney goal, you can watch as his foot moves towards the puck, then his skate leaves the ice to propel it towards the net.

I don't get it. I just don't. You can try and explain it all you want, but this is just another NHL put a blindfold on and guess randomly.

Absolutely have to make changes on the back end. How? No idea. We have no cap. But if we are actually serious about trying to win in the playoffs, it has to be done.

Disagree that we don't need a significant upgrade for Justin Holl. In the playoffs you lean on 4 guys to play major minutes and you shelter your bottom pairing. No chance I want a Muzzin / Holl pairing on the ice for an extra 6 minutes per night than they already are.

I think we need an Adam Larsson type defenseman. Just a guy who can eat minutes and play a big body game and give another pair a natural RHD with reach.

Really the NHL would only stand to benefit if there were more "black and white" guidelines on some of these situations that lead to goal challenges. The amount of times there's inconsistency on "kicking motion" or "goalie interference" calls really hurts the game.

it’s based on kicking motion. Tiereny does not distinctly kick the puck in. He guides it in, yes his foot leaves the ice but it wasn’t in a kicking motion. Matthews distinctly kicks the puck in. That’s literally the difference. The motions are completely different in both cases.

Hopefully leafs fans that thought this team is top of league and dubas shouldn’t make roster changes have been watching this road trip and specially tonight’s game

very familiar play when games get tough

They thought they were still playing the North Division. The true powerhouses are at least a couple of tiers above them.

Agreed entirely. The guy doesn't need to be a game changer, it just needs to be someone who isn't going to be a liability when he's playing 20-22 minutes per night in the playoffs.

Blowing leads with Muzzin in the lineup so blame isn't restricted to 2 young defenders.
Campbell puck tracking ability and positioning on this road trip is near top of the list of reasons why.

No doubt about it. We're a top 10 team when Campbell is on his game, but I think the gap between the top 3 or 4 teams and the next 5-7 will show up in a big way come the playoffs. Sadly, I think we're towards the back of the top 10, when fully healthy.

Just too many players on this team that are expected to play above their pay levels / historic output, due to how much money is tied up in the Big 4. The defense is missing two pieces to contend right now, IMO, and we're a two-way forward short up front as well.
