As I said in the thread on the main board, he was the coach and GM of the Wings when their playoff streak started 25 years ago.

RIP.

He always seemed like a smart guy and a good man. I'm sorry to hear this and I hope his loved ones are okay. RIP.

Murray was a great builder. His teams always took steps forward.

At Capitals he did raise the team from bottom to playoffs. Won Jack Adams in 1984.

Then at Red Wings, we did became a every-year playoff team and started to be one of most serious contenders in 90-94.

Then Murray did reach SC Finals with that crappy Florida team in 1996.

Again at Finals with another underdog Anaheim in 2003.

Lost finals on 3rd time with Ottawa at 2007.

Always seemed to make a big raise in team overall level from bad to good and teams did overachieve under him. But his teams never win a Stanley Cup and had a lot of playoff losses. For those stupid reasons, Murray got a "loser" reputation, even though his teams were mostly overachieving. Never got the best team to win it all, but did very very good building job.

Smart man, Rest In Peace.
