In 2023, Quinn Hughes became the fastest defenceman in NHL history to reach 200 career assists in 263 games played, beating Brian Leetch who reached the milestone in 264 games played. Tonight, he reaches the 300 assist milestone as the 3rd fastest defenseman.

He's pretty good.

Through 2 periods tonight he was on the ice for 1 shot against 5v5. (It's the ducks, but still)

I know this is a thread about his offensive prowess, but honestly the strides he's made as a two way player are incredible.

I honestly wonder if they heard about the record. That is so insane they changed it 3 times.
I don’t think they actually changed it the second time… I think they just messed up the scoring sheet.

If you look at NHL.com it shows EP40 from Garland only..

Doing anything faster than Paul Coffey is something I didn't see coming. That guy played in the 80's with an offensive dynasty and a non-stop green light.

well you’re certainly not going to skate faster than coffey

but tbf, coffey had a slow first year coming right in after being drafted while hughes went back to college for a year (and leetch for two years).

He is one of the best dmen in this decade. I would now say he is better than Makar overall.

23 assists in 79 games as a 19 year old rookie is going to slow the start—kind of similar to Orr having 91 in 174 games through 3 seasons, while playing his first two seasons at 18 and 19 years old.

These guys didn’t start racking up assists until their age 20 season, which is basically where Hughes began his career.

400 assists is where someone like Hughes, and likely Makar for that matter—who started at age 21—fall back off the pace. Coffey did it in 476 games and Orr is quickest at 437 games.

All that said, I wouldn’t mind seeing Hughes dish out 100 assists over his next 99 games to beat Coffey and remain second quickest to a major milestone.

That’s a good point and highlights that this record is strictly talking about games played. Usually we think of “fastest to X” in terms of age rather than GP.

At 25, Hughes is two years older than Coffey was when he notched his 300th.

Coffey had Gretzky, Messier, Andersson etc. While Hughes has who? Skinny Pete? Put Hughes on that Oilers dynasty team and i bet he would have the fastest assist to 300.

You guys look at age but forget who coffey was playing with. If you want to nit pick how Hughes is 2 years older when he beat coffey then also consider how coffey had Gretzky and Messier playing in the 80s. I think Hughes record is more impressive. He is carrying thr damn team playing 30 minutes every night.

Very good points, and Hughes won't stand a chance at Coffey's offensive output after he hits the next tier of games but still an impressive achievement. I highly doubt he puts up an assist a game over the next 99 but if there's a guy that could do it...

I'm a Canucks fan and honestly 2 years is a huge gap for early career. But yes the quality of teammates is not particularly close, especially this year and some of the earlier years of Hughes' career. So it is ridiculous when you think about it, to be in this category.

Leetch is a good comparison for Hughes as a player in general. Fast, smart, controlling the game.
