You're definitely right though, Hughes is sure a privilege to watch. We're witnessing greatness in a Canucks uniform.

He’s now tied with his brother Jack with 25 points, but in 3 fewer games (4 if you don’t count 5 minutes against Ottawa).

They’re tied for 22nd in league scoring. Last season he finished 15th in league scoring.

I believe he can finish top 20 this season as well.

He’s putting on a Hart trophy-esque season but the media isn’t talking about it.

Makar is still 5 points ahead in 1 more GP (2 if you don’t count Ottawa) but of course he’s third on his team in scoring vs Hughes being first.

Makar has also not been as good defensively as Hughes (who hasn’t been amazing defensively himself either, but acceptable).

I think it’s time the media starts talking about Hughes for back-to-back Norrises, but I think they’ll be highly resistant to giving Hughes his second before Makar gets his second.

Makar's offensive number is just too eye-popping. Not that Hughes' isn't, but when you are 7 points up on the next highest scoring D (to start the day) after 23 games like Makar was, you are going to get all the attention.

It's simply amazing the numbers Hughes is able to put up this season, with JTM playing all season injured prior to taking time off, BB6 missing a few from a concussion, and Petey nowhere near 100%, that is our 3 best forwards hobbled/injured most of the season. Imagine Hughes playing with MacK and Rantanen, I think he would match Makar's point total, if not surpass it. However, if Makar plays on this team, maybe he can match Quinn's offense, but probably not the defensive contribution.

still cant believe detroit passed on this guy, was size really holding him back? hughes has been doing pretty f***ing well for himself, probably top 3 pick in the 2018 redraft

Local radio guys have been including him in hart/ top 5 player in the league talk all season.

That simple play in OT where he was being pressured at the point, so he just threw it back to the goalie to maintain possession really impressed me. Most players don’t think the game that quickly or that well, especially considering how it’s 3-on-3 instead of 5-on -5 where he plays 95% of his hockey at.

didn’t multiple players try that in OT? i feel like it wasn’t quinn being smarter than the average bear (though he is) so much as the coaching staff taking advantage of a goalie who can handle the puck

I remember one other guy doing that…but I might be forgetting other time(s). I kept thinking that you always see that pass to the keeper in soccer, it makes sense to do it in overtime in hockey.

When I read Quinton, I always think Byfield first. Not used to seeing Hughes first name as anything but Quinn.

As for the 2016-20 super draft, my brief glance at it is as follow (I'm ready to be flamed for it but this is me giving it like 5mins of research):
1) Makar - best defenseman and one of the top player since he entered the league, give him the edge over Matthews due to playoff performance.
2) Matthews - best goalscorer since he entered the league, a great 2 way player to boot. Just haven't brought it in the playoff so far.
3) Q. Hughes - best defenseman since the beginning of the 2023-24 season, totally dominate. Makar is ahead due to being elite for longer, but Quinn is closing the gap.
4) Fox - another excellent defenseman who is awesome both offensively and defensively.
5) J. Hughes - one of the most dynamic offensive player in the league, if he can stay healthy he has the potential to be in the tier just under McDavid.
6) M. Tkachuk - really good scorer that can agitate, great playoff performer as well.
7) Heiskanen - hard to pick between him and Dahlin, but gave slight edge to Miro, he was on another level in that playoff run to the finals.
8) Dahlin - too much put on his shoulder, but still an elite defenseman. Lack of team success isn't his fault.
9) Mcavoy - slipped a little this season, but still one of the better D in the league.
10) Petterson/Stutlze - if healthy I think Petey is better, but if his knee will be a chronic problem, he could slip a lot on this list. Stutlze is elite, going to be a consistent 90+ points 1C as long as Green doesn't mess with him.

Just missed: Faber, Seider, Boldy, Ottenger, Bratt, Robertson. Can easily make an argument for any of these players to be in the list instead.

Swayman had struggled a lot this season, but if he can sustain his prior seasons level as a full time starter, he gets into the conversation as well.

Wildcard: Nikishin, what he is doing in the KHL at his age is pretty special, should be one of the ROY candidates for next season.

Lots of good D, surprisingly more impact D than F.
