Rougher play in terms of fights, scrums, roughing penalties all up dramatically in 2022/2023. This element is something the Leafs will encounter in tighter games and when teams see the Leafs as softer. Not suggesting 5 minute players but the Leafs should toughen up on D and add minimum 1 winger with snarl

A lot of fights come after a big hit and the Leafs dont have very many big hits, nor do they get hit hard.

Having said that, they did retaliate earlier this year when Matthews got roughed up.

Yes, they should always be looking to add snarl that can play the game.

Where are you getting the claim in the title?

The article you posted is from a year and a half ago, and if anything, argues the opposite - fighting is on a rapid decline, and most teams do worse when they fight.

I quickly looked at majors, and last year there was a major every 3.85 games and this year there's a major every 3.54 games. Not really a notable difference. Certainly not a 50% increase.

And actually, I think that difference has more to do with an increase in 5 min match penalties, not fighting majors. There were 8 all of last year, and there are already 7 this year.

Of the ten teams with the most major penalties last season, only three made the playoffs, and two of them were eliminated in the first round with a combined record of 2-8.

Has any team really fought their way to the Cup since the 70s?
