I was wondering what your guy's opinions are on what we might do in the off season if Quick continues to struggle and Bernier keeps on playing well. The notion of us trading Bernier seems absolutely crazy to me. I understand Quick had surgery in the off season on his back even though it seemed pretty minor from what I read, but he seems he is playing the worst he has in about 3 seasons. How short is his leash? I love Quick and understand how instrumental he was in us winning our first cup. I'd just like to see how you guys feel on the subject and what you guys feel we should do.

Go Kings! :yo:

Quicks leash is so long it can circle the earth twice.

As what Dingo(lol weird name) said when the defense comes back then you decide, because when the defense is 100% then so is quick because they support his style much better that way.

Quick's leash goes beyond this season and the next, which is longer than Bernier has. Bernier will be dealt from this team by the draft no matter what. Outside of Quick getting hit by a bus in the near future, Bernier will be playing with another team at the start of next year.

i agree JB will be traded at the draft, when DL can get max value for him.

Quick's leash is endless at this point. the end is someplace out there, but only DL and the Hubble telescope can see it.

the fact he was cleared about a week before the lockout ended, means he wasn't in shape and ready to go. the guy has had to play back into shape after back surgery. for a guy that relies on strength, agility, flexibility and timing the lack of pre-season conditioning severely hindered him at the start. add to this the total lack of practice time for him and the team once the season started, has only compounded the situation. i think we are beginning to see him return to normal finally.

Quick is the #1 reason why this organization has it's first Stanley Cup in 45 years. How was he rewarded for that? the Kings gave him a 10-year contract extension.

I'd say his leash is about as long as it gets.

Quick has been a number 1 goalie for 4 years now. His leash is about 10 years long

I would like to know one thing before saying anything on the whole Quick, Bernier debate.

I do know for a fact, been told by a very highly valued Orthopedic specialists, that there really is no such thing as simple back surgery. Even the easier procedures such as disk bulges can leave scar tissues that will affect recovery to the point of additional surgery being required. Even past that point, it can permanently affect the patient in a negative way, past a point of corrective procedures. I hope this hasn't been the case with Quicker with his surgery and with the future of the Kings being banked on it, i would REALLY like to see that answered before i made a decision on the future of the net.

I have 2 friends that had Disk surgery, one of them has had about 7 other procedures and the other one only needed the one and was ok after the surgery. They were both for Disk Bulges. So I don't think Disk surgery could be called a minor procedure, unless you compare it to something like a bilateral break of the spine.

I think everyone can agree that Bernier is doing better for the Kings this year than Quick has. I agree 100% that Bernier should be getting the load of work while they figure out Quick. What works, works and what doesn't doesn't. Bernier's been on the working side of the Kings so far and I would not trade him until I knew 100% what's wrong with Quick. Just to be safe.

I am not sure why this is even a debate.

As have been stated here and in other threads ad naseum, if he is not traded by the draft, he becomes a restricted free agent. We cannot match any offer sheet tendered by another team, which I would bet my house on will be high. We have to save that money for unrestricted free agents, most notably Slava Voynov. He has to be dealt by the draft.

You can't assume that Quick is being bothered by his back. He was injured through the playoffs last year and he was Conn Smythe. What if it's just a down year? What if it's a product of problems on defense? You give a goalie a 10 year contract, it's a commitment. Quick is your starting goaltender.

There's no debate, Bernier will not sign a contract to stay with this team. The only thing the Kings can do is trade him, otherwise we get railroaded by an offer sheet we cannot match, for you cannot trade a player for a year after said offer sheet.

Watch what you say about knowing anything about back surgery or anything medical. You will get slammed by Chazz R.:p:

Bernier does not want to be a backup goalie anymore and he can't be blamed for that. DL will evaluate the offers, before the trade deadline as well as during the draft.

But I am just wondering, if Bernier goes before Wednesday, who will be our back-up? Quick will get his game together but if that does not happen this year, we need a good backup.

Honestly, unless we find a plan B, I don't see Bernier going anywhere. He's an RFA. We can force him to arbitration. Any reasonable offer sheet we can match - and do you think someone is going to give him a crazy offer sheet & send a bunch of picks our way?
Whether he likes it or not, we need to do what's good for the team - and if that means keeping him 1 or 2 more years in the backup role, that's what we'll do.

Is there a point in the season where you almost want him to get an offer sheet just to get the compensation of picks if you think someone is going to go that hard at him? Or are we in too much of a win now type mode to do that? I mean what if we were to win another cup on the back of Bernier?

Ok so we all know we don't have a first. And we all know we can't afford to let JB get offer sheeted. So draft day trade...

If we let him keep playing and it really looks like he's as good as we've been saying, is there any team who would have a high pick (someone who won't make the playoffs this year other than Calgary) who could use JB?

If we can somehow trade in to the top 3, we could get a guy who could play right away, using JB+. Maybe JB+++. We may be able to deal for a goalie or sign one while we're at it...

That would give the team a bad rep with players making it harder to attract them in trades where NTC/NMC are in affect. Not to mention making landing RFA's even harder than it already is. He has said he didn't ask for a trade but we all know he wants a shot at the starting role. And we need to trade him to give him that shot. Just not within our division for next year.
But no team will offer him a ton but they will offer him enough we can't really afford to match. I'm thinking in the 2.5-3.3 range which would mean we would only get a second round for him. And with the cap going down we can't afford to have over 9M tied up in goal. And a second is not a good return on him even with as tricky as trading goalies is.

Lombardi wouldnt do that to him, look at what happened with Gagne. he'll wait for the right deal and then he'll pull the trigger
