So what if yesterday in Calgary Backes and Steen weren't able to go? We are only carrying 1 extra forward. Do we play 7 D men?

Yes.

We've been in the situation a few times before. When Backes first got called up to the NHL we had been using 7 D-men for a few games.

Most likely, yeah.

I remember times where Matt Walker and Tyson Strachan took shifts on the 4th line for us. Somebody else too, maybe Woywitka.
