That 1rnder is secured by the Leafs if Pitt makes the playoffs. But I believe the quality of the pick depends on where they finish at the end of the playoffs.

1st is guaranteed if Pitt makes playoffs but it could get worse or better depending on the result of the playoffs. Draft order from 30-15 goes:

30-27: conference finalists
26-xx: remaining division winners
xx-15: remaining playoff teams by reg season points

So we want Pitt to lose in round 1 or 2 (doesn't matter which) but also it would be good if a team behind them gets to the conference finals

The base calculation starts where all PO teams finish the reg season. Every teams starts where they finished

The teams that make it to the final 4 pick 30.29.28,27

So the Pitt pick can do some moving during the POs , but it's only the final 4 that cause draft slots to move.

So the best case scenario is that Pitt makes the playoffs in 16th place overall, and is eliminated in the first 2 rounds...
