Bit of an odd question, but what happens, manpower wise (in the NHL), if a team takes two bench minor penalties at the same stoppage?
In USA Hockey, they are treated as two separate infractions, so the coach must designate two players to serve two minutes each, so the on-ice strength goes to 5-on-3 for two minutes. The IIHF, their casebook from 08 says the coach is able to designate one player to serve both penalties, so 5-on-4 for four minutes.
What happens in the NHL? An example of this scenario would be a team being called for a too many men penalty, and before the ensuing faceoff, the coach for that team takes an unsportsmanlike bench minor for vehemently disagreeing with the call. You could swap out the penalty to the coach for any bench minor, but this seems the most plausible scenario.
I know how it works if two normal minors are assessed to either one or two players, but what about two bench minors? Is it 5-on-3 for with two players serving for two minutes, or would they use 5-on-4 for four minutes with one player serving?
If I were a betting man, I'd say the NHL follows the USA Hockey rule and the offending team would go down two men because they're two separate penalties. But that IIHF rule makes me ask. Help a guy out?
