The Blue Jackets announced this afternoon that Prout underwent surgery today to repair what's being termed as a "lingering abdominal injury," and he's expected to miss the start of camp next month as a result. GM Jarmo Kekalainen said in a team-issued statement that Prout had recently complained of soreness and a muscle tear was the initial diagnosis, but further tests showed a "slight tear" and thus surgery was required.

I don't think he was assured a spot anyway, but if he misses much time, it will make camp even more interesting.

Without Prout the Jackets are down to only 1 right handed defenseman. Looks more like a chance for Golo or Savard.

Did you see him in rookie camp and not like his play? Why so strongly opposed?

He looked fine in rookie camp. He's also 6 years older than some of the competition, or at the very least 4 years. He should look fine against them. Until I see him play against men I am going to go on his scouting report.

I feel bad for Prout. Even though he may be healthy at the start of the regular season, the next 6 weeks (and training camp) are when an NHL player really starts to ramp up their game legs. With an abdominal injury, he's not likely going to be able to do much conditioning during this time either. Missing this time, he's likely going to have to start in Springy and hope someone hasn't taken his spot.

This is a golden opportunity for Golo, Savard, Murray or Melart to grab the open spot in the top 6 and for another to be #7.

Yeah, how dare some of us want to develop the kids and have them force their way onto the roster...

Based on what's been said on here, the guy could tear up camp, the pre-season, and some on here would still complain he's being rushed.

If he's good enough to make the team, he should make the team. Even CBJProspects has to agree that he's got a really low risk of being Brule'd/Johansen'd.

I hate when people say we rushed Johansen.Playing in the NHL was better for him than lighting up the WHL and floating through the season.

There was no ideal situation. But I think sending him to the WHL would have been the lesser of 2 evils compared to developing crappy habits on an extraordinarily crappy team.

Who knows, maybe if he isn't handed a spot he wasn't ready for at the time, he doesn't act like a jackass when he's send down for the AHL playoffs.

How much damage has been done remains to be seen. Some prospects can recover really well, and I think Johansen will become at least a decent 2nd line cente. Brent Burns (who was ranked something like 140th his draft year and ended up being taken 20th) was not only put in the NHL the year after he was drafted but was converted to defense. Somehow, he turned out okay.

"Insisting" he play in Springfield pretty much doesn't allow for him to "force his way onto the roster."

EDIT:
As has been pointed out.

What if he "forces his way onto the roster" in the preseason?

fwiw, to me he looked very slow. big and strong, sure, but slow. That said, he could probably fill an "Aucoin" type role, but the problem with that is the lack of experience to keep his slow feet out of trouble.

My impression of him based on very little was that he was kind of a goon/meathead brought in to bring some nasty more than bring defense. I could be way wrong.

During his interview during the rookie camp, he mentioned that in Finland, it's easy to become known as a toughman. Don't need to do much to get a reputation of being a tough player. I don't think he is a goon/meathead that skates around to make trouble(although I could be wrong as I don't know much about him).

I do agree, think he was brought in to be nasty and not for his defensive game. Could see him the type of player to cross check anyone that decides to camp in front of Bob/Mac. Or maybe throw out a big hit when a player is carrying the puck across the blue line or at the corner of the rink. Make players think twice about going to the corner or carrying the puck across the blue line.

Actually, it's funny, went back to watch the interview and HE think he was brought in for his playing skills and not his toughness.

Would a smaller rink in the NHL help him with his lack of speed?

if he does, great...we all can admit the speed of the game from juniors to nhl is very different...i just want the best for our #1 prospect not to pen him into the starting 6 like some have here...

Obviously. How else could he have developed into a shut down center with a potential attitude problem. :sarcasm:

Edit: Trying to stay on topic - It always amazes me when guys have surgery shortly before camp opens. Not just in this case but in all sports. From the article not sure exactly when the problem came up - too bad it wasn't diagnosed properly from the start.

Edit two: Misery loves company http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/08/15/flyers-captain-giroux-to-miss-5-6-weeks-after-finger-surgery/related/
