Props to Barrie Colts Scouting

I just want to give props to the Barrie Colts and Mark Seidel’s scouting staff. Mark gas been one of the best evaluators in hockey for a long time, and I don’t think he and the Colts get enough credit for developing players and accumulating talent.

The Colts often hit on their top 3 round picks and these players often end up in the 1st or 2nd round of the NHL draft. Recent examples of this are:
Cole Beaudoin (potential 1st round pick ‘24)
Beau Akey (2nd round, 2023)
Hunter Haight (2nd round ‘22)
Brandt Clarke (1st round ‘21)
Tyson Foerster (1st round ‘20)

These are elite players who were drafted in the NHL ahead of many of their OHL draft class. They have also started to draft ahead in the CHL import Draft with recent selections Edouard Sale and Michael Nygard who will be NHL draft selected and then join the team after becoming 1st round picks. Kashawn Aitcheson, who was an OHL 3rd round pick is rocketing up 2025 NHL draft boards and their shrewd trade with London for the rights to William Moore, may pay off if he decides once he is drafted into the NHL, to go the OHL route.

Hopefully, with Beau Akey healthy, Beau Jelsma back as an overager, the continued development of a strong 2006 class (Cole Beaudoin, Riley Patterson, Kashawn Aitcheson) and some European additions such as Brandsegg-Nygard; the Colts can challenge for the OHL title.

Not going to lie, I have Jack Brauti absurdly high in my rankings and I know a few other scouts who have him in the 3-6 round range. Won't be surprised when he gets drafted in June.

There in lays the problem. Great scouting and drafting is part of the equation but sadly for Barrie historically they struggle on the ice? Huge setback when Dale Hawerchuck passed away at such a young age. I think he would have gotten maximum results from the exceptional drafting you speak of. R.I.P. Dale forever missed in the hockey world.

Hawerchuk was a great person and coach, and one of my favourite players ever.

Williamson is building his team from scratch this time. I think there is good chance that it works.
His team did have the battalion on the ropes last season. It looked to me that Cardwell-Clarke-Veirling would not be stopped.
Christopolous put a stop to it though.
 
Imagine Barrie Colts getting all the players they have the rights to next year:

Michael Brandsegg-Nygard
Emil Hemming
John Mustard
William Moore

Add that to the elite players they already have:

Beau Akey
Cole Beaudoin
Kashawn Aitcheson
Beau Jelsma
Riley Patterson

I disagree. I think in the OHL, scouting is about both talent and signability. This goes for both OHL drafted players and import players. If a baseball HS draftee signs, the area scout gets credited with that signing, as he or she usually has developed a relationship which leads to the team knowing they can draft and sign them. Barrie obviously had a relationship with someone with Dallas and with someone with Hemming. To say that that has nothing to do with scouting I think is not accurate, because scouting is about relationships.

I’ve been through it, I work for a team. it’s agents and Marty Williamson.

I can almost promise you Ty his is what happened. Claude Lemieux called Marty and gave him the name, said he was a top pick and to see if they would have a spot. Claude probably called because he had good success there before. Marty did the due diligence, called a few nhl teams and when he knew how good the kid was, he drafted him. The right team drafted him and got him over to North America. It’s got zero to do with scouting and everything to do with relationships

Are you suggesting my hands on experience is not as good as your???? Not trying to be a dick but I’ve literally watched the process play out

Finland has announced their Ivan Hlinka roster. Barrie looks like they are getting Patrik Kerkola, who is listed as playing for the Barrie Colts, their second round import pick from Finland which gets them one of the top goalies in the 2025 NHL draft and forms a great tandem with underrated Sam Hillebrandt.

It sounds like there was no betting on the draft order the day of the draft and all markets had to be closed 24 hours prior so i don't know if the betting thing is an actual concern.

I'd be more concerned he was leaking to a team potentially to land a job or something.

i would think that if the navada gaming got involved there was a reason, they wouldnt care if a journalist was leaking things to a random dude to post on twitter.

now, if you want an interesting story, i would think that why mark only lasted 3 months with the minnesota wild would be very interesting. ive heard the speculation from enough people that i believe it, but i wont post it because i dont know for sure that its true.

It definitely would as there was betting markets available on it prior.
They likely had to investigate to find out the details and time lines to see if any chance of market manipulation.
Finding out 2 minutes prior would be a non-issue as even as the Nevada gaming commision put in their statement the markets were closed 24 hours prior to the start so there was zero risk to the markets.
 
Finding out 2 minutes prior to selection for the next team in line (say Minnesota who traded up 1 pick) may offer some advantages during the draft though if they always knew who was going next.

could be, i have no knowledge of anything about betting, im too old, i bet on horses not hockey lol.

haha. I've done quite a bit of work with one of the industries biggest data providers and had to take lots of courses on match fixing. marketing manipulation and ethics, etc
It's a wild world when it involves betting and sports right now.
