Guys had to share. Wife and I walked to Starbucks in Hoboken for breakfast and sit down. Guy sits down across from us at the big communal table and says hey nice hats (both of us wearing NYR caps). We start talking super nice guy looks real familiar and he says I played for the NYR for a little bit actually. And I knew it. Mike Hartman for the oldtimers here that may remember the Black Ace during our Cup run He couldn’t believe I knew who he was. Guy shared a bunch of great Keenan and Messier stories and celebrating the reunion this year. we ended chatted for over an hour having our coffees. Owns a company with Matteau moved around the block from us. We’re going to try and make dinner plans soon.

Just a pretty cool breakfast!

That's a cool story! My buddy met Hartman down in Florida right after he retired. They had a few beers & talked hockey for a few hours. Confirmed exactly what you said, that he was just a super down to earth guy.

Awesome, Kovy!

Still remember that goal that I think either Peter Andersson or Doug Lidster scored (pretty sure it was one of the defensemen), and immediately turned around and pointed to the press box where the Black Aces were all sitting.

It was Peter Andersson. I was at that game.

I guess he recently moved from Charlotte.

I met him in a Dick’s buying street hockey gear for my daughter. Then, I saw him again in my neighborhood. His girlfriend lived here and I used to see him driving while I walked my dog.

And I thought this thread would be about a barista drawing a foam NYR logo in your cappuccino!

Mike Hartman played minor league hockey for years after retiring from the NHL. He ended up living in Charlotte, and, after being out of hockey for a few years, he started suiting up for the Rangers-affiliate Checkers when they were shorthanded from injuries or call-ups. He did that off-and-on for four or five years, and played his last game in the 2007-8 season, when he was 40 years old, alongside such luminaries as Tommy Pyatt, Lee Falardeau, Bruce Graham, and Matt "Abba" Zaba.

That's really cool. I saw him at the '94 reunion event and he told some stories about the black aces and to be perfectly honest I would not have recognized him at a starbucks, even with the prodding.

#18 on your playoff program, if memory serves

as i recall, NYR pushed to get guys like Hartman named on the Cup, despite standards at that time (he only played ~35 games, none in Final)

1993–94 New York Rangers season - Wikipedia
Stanley Cup engraving

  • 1991, 1992 Pittsburgh, and 1993 Montreal included at least one player on the Stanley Cup who did not officially qualify. When the New York Rangers submitted their list of names for engraving, Ed Olczyk and Mike Hartman were included. Ed Olczyk played 37 regular-season games, and played 1 game in the conference finals. Mike Hartman played 35 regular-season games, but did not play in the playoffs. Both players spent the entire season with New York Rangers, and missed over 10 games due to injuries. When the Stanley Cup was engraved, Olczyk and Hartman's names were not included. The Rangers protested so the NHL added Olczyk and Hartman to the bottom of the cup. The NHL does not add missing names after the cup has been engraved, but made an exception in this case."
and of course this, which many hockey fans, especially of Red Wings, somehow forget:
"Alexander Karpovtsev, Alexei Kovalev, Sergei Nemchinov and Sergei Zubov became the first four Russian-trained players to have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup"

He doesn’t look like an athlete. He’s a shade under 6’, and looks like an average guy in his 40s.

When he started talking to me in Dick’s in Matthews, NC, I thought he was screwing with me, until he showed me the ring. Then he said how much he hated Keenan. I then said that I remembered him scoring against the Islanders on a Saturday night in March. He was shocked I remembered that, and said that I really was a fan. Thanked me. Just really a cool guy.
