Speculation: Roster Building thread: Part XIX (Thanks, Sam)

Even the most optimistic Rangers fan cannot see any path to the playoffs this season. So let's make some predictions for this coming offseason. I'll break it into 5 categories:

Coaches
GM
Trades
UFA Signings
Surprise Move

Coaches -
Laviolette and his entire staff are let go. Won't be a popular choice for many but the new coach will be Joel Quennville unless Pittsburgh fires Mike Sullivan.

GM - Drury will still be GM but this team will have to make the playoffs next season for him to stay GM.

Trades -
Chris Kreider to Boston for a 2nd Round Pick
Alexis Lafreniere, Zac Jones and Adam Edstrom to Buffalo for JJ Peterka and Jacob Bernard-Docker
K'Andre Miller, Adam Sykora and a 4th Round Pick to Anaheim For Mason McTavish
Mika Zibanejad will waive his NMC to go to San Jose for Shakir Mukhamadullin and Quentin Musty
Drury will give this year's 1st Round Pick to Pittsburgh

UFA Signings -
Sam Bennett - 7 Years at $9 Million AAV
Ivan Provorov - 5 Years at $7.5 Million AAV
Justin Brazeau - 3 Years at $2.5 Million AAV

Surprise Move - Vincent Trocheck to Pittsburgh For Evgeni Malkin

Panarin - Miller - Peterka
McTavish - Malkin - Othmann
Cuylle - Bennett - Brazeau
Roobroeck - Carrick - Rempe
13th Forward - Brodzinski (let Perreault start in Hartford)

Provorov - Fox
Soucy - Borgen
Bernard-Docker - Schneider
7th D - Vaakanainen

Shesterkin
Quick

I'm not sure there is much the Rangers can do. Hands might be tied. And it all depends on their self-valuation and approach.

As much as it pains me, Kreider is likely gone. Maybe they keep him to see if he can bounce back. Value is low right now. See where they're at by the deadline.
Mika needs to be worked with to waive the NTC and sent elsewhere.
I would probably find a way to trade Trocheck.
Lafreniere has been a disappointment. Probably time for a change of scenery,
Kaliyev, Parsinnen, Aube-Kubel don't matter. Let them all go.

K'Andre Miller. Traded. You can't lock him up long term. Time to move on.

Really the only defensemen we should keep that would be staples in the lineup are Fox, Schneider, and Borgen. I like Jones but I don't think he'll remain in NY this offseason.

BUT DRURY SHOULD NOT BE THE ONE TO MAKE THESE MOVES!

On Soucy I don't know whether he's a good player or not. It's hard to fit into a situation that's blowing up with no stability and an exploitable and chaotic defense system. He's signed for one more year. He can be moved during the season next year probably pretty easily.

I wouldn't move Trocheck. His production numbers are down from last year but they're still good for the contract he has and he's a workhorse who does a lot of little things well. He's been taking face-offs at 60% too. You're not going to find better than that.

Here I can help you: He’s not a good player.

He hasn’t been a good player for a while

If Drury is going to hire a new coach, I can't see him being fired 1 year later. The new GM will come in and want his own coach. Maybe he waits a year to make the change, but then we've just got a lame duck situation.

More likely, if Dolan is going to allow Drury to hire a new coach, he'll let that play out and eventually dump them both at the same time.

I don't think any of these moves make sense. Boston is going into a rebuild, or at least a serious re-tooling. I'm not sure how much interest they'll have in Kreider.

Laf for Peterka might make sense, but we don't need another right-handed dman.

Anaheim isn't trading McTavish and Zib isn't waiving for San Jose.

Drury might give this year's 1st to Pittsburgh. If we end up with the 14th pick or worse, he definitely will. I'm not 100% convinced that he will give it up if we're picking 11th, 12th or 13th. He negotiated the top 13 protection for a reason.

UFA Signings - Sam Bennett - 7 Years at $9 Million AAV
Ivan Provorov - 5 Years at $7.5 Million AAV
Justin Brazeau - 3 Years at $2.5 Million AAV
I like Bennett, but that's a significant overpayment.

Provorov probably won't be available. Columbus will likely re-sign him.

It's interesting that you suggest the same contract for Brazeau that we gave Nemeth, because he'll likely turn out the same. Brazeau is 27, has played 81 NHL games, and is currently making league minimum. No GM is giving him that kind of contract.

Surprise Move - Vincent Trocheck to Pittsburgh For Evgeni Malkin
Neither team will do this, and Malkin would say no in any case.

How about Adam Larsson as an UFA if they can afford him? Underrated option?
Larsson isn't a UFA. He signed an extension back in September.

Here I can help you: He’s not a good player.

He hasn’t been a good player for a while

He didn’t fit in with the system in Vancouver, this is true. But in fairness the teams Norris trophy winning d-man looks bad in the current system. I’d say it’s worthwhile to give him some time.

I don’t hate the idea of Soucy. The team appears high on Dorrington and Fortescue. Going in to the offseason with a need for a LD sounds easy enough to fill until you realize that Brenden Dillon got 3 years as an older player at $4m. If Drury and the team want anyone of some quality you’re looking at term. And that term may be something they are reluctant to give for 3LD.

Is he perfect? No. But he’s likely better than anyone the team could sign for a 1-year term and he’s also someone, should Dorrington progress appropriately, that they could trade and recoup something.

He’s someone who needs to play in a zone based defense and he’s being thrust in to man on man.

No, I won’t be giving him any time. He’s bad and been bad for a while. They could sign a guy for minimum and they’d probably be better than him.

This guy is one of the few defensemen that was worse than Lindgren. We did this same shit with Lindgren for years, I have no interest in doing it again

The biggest problem with Drury is that he's the president too. I'm not seeing too much talk of this, but this organization is his. The only guy who can fire him is Dolan. How the f*** did he end up in that spot?

Sather earned it, whether we like him or not. JD earned it, went through the ranks. Drury hobnobbed and backstabbed his way into both spots and now has pretty much complete charge. Simply put, he never had enough experience for either job and now we're living through his mistakes.

What exactly is Lord Beric's plan? He never comes out of the cave, never says anything even in front of people!! It's always a zoom call. Does colony Grill have a cave in the basement?

I doubt he gets fired. Ol Jimmy isn't gonna fire his mentor's hand picked successor after one bad season. But this looks like a train beginning to derail. How long is he gonna get to try and figure it out? We're almost at scorched earth levels.

There are obvious things the team will need to decide this summer but laffy and kam are going to be two wildcards. Key has been awful and I'm not giving him a pass but this has been progressively worse since Housley got here. You would hate to move him for who knows what and then see him rebound within another team with some actual structure, not to mentioned nyr ld depth is already quite poor.

Laffy is going to be the other wildcard. Conditioning appears to still be an issue with him 5+ years into his career. Defensive laziness and consistency are still regular problems. He's clearly a kid that needs a strong room and culture around him to keep him on a path and that is something nyr does not have. So IF nyr looked to trade him who can take that contract? Who's willing to take it? Who has assets that nyr would want in exchange for that contract? Laffy does not have the kind of league wide value most here probably think he does. I think those people claiming they wouldn't trade laffy for Brady tkachuk earlier this year have moved on from that nonsense.

I wish we were able to take that kakko cozens trade I brought up. Cozens looks like a real player now that he's with a real team.

Whoever makes the next coaching hire really needs to get the right person here. This team needs someone that will demand a standard of conditioning and 200' commitment.

This off-season can be viewed as pivitoal for the organization for the next 3 or so years.

There is a world that Drury could hire a gm under him and pass this mess off to someone else. He can keep his job as president and allow a gm to hire the next coach

Ironically, his CF% stats at 5v5 are pretty good with the Rangers. It’s been 11 games so it’s a small sample size but still interesting.

His playing style just did not fit in Vancouver at all. Something was off there with him. He was pretty good in Seattle.

Borgen is similar in that when Seattle changes their system and signed guys to play ahead of him he struggled. It doesn’t mean he’s a bad player it just means he’s a guy who should play in certain types of situations. IMO, Borgen has been good

Somebody tell me how Vaak loses the battle/race, when he has 2 steps on an attacker? How does he fail to get to the puck first so many times? He shouldn't be more than a 7th next season.

Next season might be Schneider's last to show some improvement here.

I don't want to think about Soucy. Can't wait to run it back.

Resigning Lindgren, extending Igor to a ridiculous contract 24 hours after the Trouba debacle, and bringing in Miller should be enough to seal Drurys fate. He sucks. And he should take Trocheck with him. Don’t know how this guy continues to dodge criticism, he was brutal the entire year. But fun, we get him and miller as bromance 2.0.

Rangers really screwed themselves when they gave Shesh that extension. I'd understand it more if they did it last summer. When they did it is just a head scratcher. If Zib and Kreider were younger maybe could attribute it to a down year. Can't say that with their current ages.

If they really want to change things up and redistribute their salary cap they have to move Panarin. I'm sure they could find a deal where they take little to nothing cap back. Can break that salary up into 2 really good players.

Moving Kreider is a definite. I dont see a taker for Zib and unless Drury is gone I don't see them moving Laff.
