First off, I would like to thank @ryerockarola for the great job he did last year on the Prediction Contest. Maintaining all of the point totals is a bit tricky, especially when he had to deal with people like me and all of my angst against those who keep picking the opposition to win...

I really like this contest as it is a fun way to pass the year, so I will be continuing it for this season. Remember, this is all for fun, the only thing you win is bragging rights, and for some of us, that's good enough...

As @SLAYER has pointed out in the past, let's make this fun and easy. The first thing you should post is your winning team, the score of the game, and the player you think will score the first goal. After that, you can post whatever you want. I'm guilty of not following this myself, so I will have to be careful, after all...

And as a reminder, here's how you are awarded points:

1 point: correct winning team
2 points: correct final score and winning team
3 points: player to score first goal of game
BONUS 2 POINTS: all 3 above correct

No one managed to get all three correct last season, although some of you did come close. Maybe this year someone will hit the trifecta...

Also, if you do manage to post more than one prediction (like no one has ever done that :sarcasm:), I will do my best to kindly ask you which prediction you actually would like to use. If I don't get a response, then your last prediction is the one that I will go with.

Please note that these points will not count towards your season totals, this is just to get back into the routine of the contest. Now on to the predictions for the Winnipeg Jets at Calgary Flames game...

And don't forget to get your posts in before the puck drop for them to count...

Winnipeg 1963-0 Hannu Jarvenpaa

I thought I would have fun with this one since the points do not count. In honour of HFBoards anointing prospects to the HOF on the basis of small sample sizes I name the opening goal scorer as Hannu Jarvenpaa's since his 4 goal pre-season game is legendary. I wonder what @Ippenator would have had to say about Hannu.

Jarvenpaa came over as an over-ripened 23 year-old (perhaps the reason he wore #23) after having been drafted originally by Montreal in 1982 and then re-drafted by Winnipeg in 1986.

I chose Jets scoring 1963 goals as that is the birth year of both Hannu and myself.

Of course the true HOF over-ripened Finnish goal scoring star arrived in Winnipeg 6 years later and scored a rookie record 76 goals which will probably never be broken.

I remember Järvenpää well. He was a pretty good Liiga player and also had some good tournaments in the Finnish national team. I think he was especially shining at the 1992 Albertville Olympics. But in general he was lacking a bit too much of skill and skating skills to become a good NHL player. I still have some good memories of him as a player. Nice to see that he is remembered in Winnipeg even a long time after his career ended.
