Bottom line of success is that with Dubinsky/Anisimov/Rupp/Boyle
The NYR had the most successful season because they had the size AND skill at center to impose and effectively defend in a swarm with their elite defenders.

B.Skej reminds of Bret Hedican as a speedy #5/6 checker and with him and McIlrath the NYR could have as many as 6 1st round pick blueliners in their top 8(MDZ/Eminger/Staal/McDonagh)

Yet if you look through their system they don't have even 1 power center after JT Miller. If Miller fill out to say 215 lbs which he was last season before cutting weight for speed concerns.

ideally Richards/Stepan are top pivots and Brassard/Miller are 3rd pivots but a solid #2 Power Center is clearly needed. The size and effectiveness of having elite defenders and goalies is undermined by having just average power rating at Center when the avg defender now is at least 210-230 lbs. Defenders are much bigger now and having a few extra big bodied Centers(Kreider was a Center when drafted) would help alleviate the pressure.

Thoughts on who to target be it undrafted FA's or trade targets...i'm out of ideas unless a mega swap for J. Thornton emerges, I don't see a legit top 2 line Power Center being available any time soon. Even Lecavalier could have been a decent fit short term on a 1 yr deal before returning to TB.:help::help::help:

our best season recently dubi played wing, arty was not a "power" center, rupp missed a quarter of the season. our 2 best C's were richards and stepan who are anything but powerful....

I, for one, am a big fan of JT Miller. He didn't belong in the NHL last season, so considering that, I think he gave a pretty good showing.

Cristoval Nieves, Steven Fogarty, Andrew Yogan, Adam Tambellini (should fill out).

I'm looking at the system and I see centers with size and skill.

AA was anything but a power center, spent most of the game on his rear end, Dubi, didn't play center...the last power center we had was Mess...

Agreed. The two questions are:

1) Do the Rangers see him as a center or a wing?

2) When does he stick long-term. Guys like McDonagh, Callahan, Dubinsky were successful because they showed they were ready and bust the door down instead of having the door opened for them.

Having a big center on one of your top two lines is all well and good, but it's hardly a necessity.

I think Jean and Fogarty are the closest things we have to traditional "power centers" in the organization. Nieves is big, but he's not an overly physical player. Miller isn't huge, and I still think he ends up as a wing in the NHL.

I do like the idea of big centers and small wingers. It makes sense given the traits that correlate with size.

First and foremost you do want to make sure your centers can skate well. They cover the most ground.

As someone who watches 98% of Gophers games, Skjei is pretty soft. Fast and big, yes, but not a hitter.

Maybe if Florida wants to convert Huberdeau back to center, Bjugstad will be available. Doubt it though.

Size, yes. He's talking Power Center though, theres a difference. Yogan seems like the only one that fits the bill, as of now. And he's a Winger.

Miller might be the best, and cheapest option for 3rd line Center in the near future.

Vigneault/Kreider piece I just came across: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/4-york-rangers-benefit-arrival-alain-vigneault-143300980.html

All of those guys are raw and have plenty of time to bulk up and develop their games. But I understand your point.

Still, I'm not seeing this pressing need for a "power" center. Who is a power center on the Bruins? The Penguins?

power center/power forward/stay at home power dman... blah blah blah...i still think theres some measure of torts systemitis lingering....

when i see "power" in front of anything i think lumbering, poor skating, big, slow, not overly skilled, puck cycling, dump and chase, wear you down 3rd/4th liner type hockey players. in other words... the torts system...

mike gartner, mark pavelich, adam graves, reijo ruotsalainen, brian leetch, wayne gretzky, alex kovalev, steve larmer..... all not power players per say.

power is great as long as you can skate, pass and shoot it.

i want goal scorers gosh darn it !!!!

The fan's of Dubinsky and Prust still longing.

Irrational to think the team would be better off without Nash. We need a player like him and we can't seem to draft anything close.

The organization is thin when it comes to players who initiate physically at every position, isn't that the real issue? 'Physical elements' that never seem to be fully realized by this organization. Collectively I think fans ask too much of guys like Cally who will burn out fast without having some let up over a full season.

They drafted Mcilrath, but even he is one player, no really, he is.

You need to be able to skate this day and age. Period. Especially as a center.

Jason Allison is a good example of a guy that would've been considered a power center but wouldnt be able to hack it in today's game.

I never liked him 'back in his day' either.

Centers who can skate and cover alot of ground while playing confidently on both sides of the puck is what you want. You don't have to have 4 all star caliber Centers but man you better have guys that can play hockey. Nemchinov was an all around solid Center for that team back in the day. Could handle whatever game you threw at him. I'd like to get as many of those as possible, starting this Fall with OL

Nemchinov. Now there's an underrated Rangers centerman.

If you combine the best attributes of Stepan, Richards, Brassard, Moore, Boyle, and Powe, you might have a complete player :)

Still think that'll be Lindberg's job.

I think Miller struggles a bit in the middle. When you ease up on the two-way responsibility, you start to see him take a more active role from shift to shift. Just my take on things, and I seem to be alone in that regard.
