I think his point is "It isn't a brand new law catching you off guard; a passport has been required for land crossing for over 8 years now".
Actually, you are not required to produce a passport when traveling by car, a birth certificate or proof of citizenship and proof of identity, which can be a gov issued id (military, drivers license). Also, you can also cross using a Nexus card. I have actually gone across with just my Driver's license, mind you, I had to go in and speak with them, and was told that in the future that they were passing a law that allowed them to charge you a fee for not having the proper documents for crossing.

As someone from Toronto who has been watching this tournament since 2000, I'll say this. I prefer when the tournament is in Europe.

I also do enjoy the Halifaxs, Saskatoons etc... But here are some reasons why.

-It felt special that this was an international tournament, now that it has basically been within a two hour drive of me 4 times since 2011, it feels less international to me cause it is right here. That may sound weird, but it just feels like another event that Toronto has (We never used to get anything, and now we've had too much! Don't forget the PanAms as well).

-Being in Europe, the games are in the morning, and maybe this is childish, but that "waking up on boxing day to watch Canada play" feeling is real. I take vacation (but can't afford to go anywhere) during the Christmas break, so I have plenty of time to watch the tourney. Waking up early with nowhere to go, and watching a game over breakfast and coffee is amazing. Now, games are primetime, competing with NHL and NBA, so I have to prioritize. Early in the morning, nothing competes with the WJC.

-The European crowds. They are amazing. Its the same corporate Leafs crowd here in Toronto. Well not quite. It's a bit more rambunctious, but it does not compare with the joyous European crowd which adds an extra element to the tournament.

-Yes, I love the Canada-US rivalry, but I love seeing the others such as Sweden-Finland. But when it is here, you just don't feel it.

As others have mentioned, it needs to move away from these huge markets. I'd love to see it in jr hockey places such as Kelowna, Moncton etc... As well as US cities. Somewhere in Minnesota is dying for this maybe Duluth sharing with Minneapolis, as mentioned, the Grand Forks year was amazing. What about even Rochester, Minnesota and Dubuque or Des Moines? Maybe that is going too far. And of course, more in Europe.

You make fun of Saskatoon.... but they're pulling pretty much 15K sellouts for the NLL every night..... at $35-$75 a ticket...

The middle class over all has less purchasing power now then 10 years ago. Things are in decline. They are getting tight and picky.

You may have misunderstood. I would love for the tournament to go back to Saskatoon. In fact a place like Saskatoon is perfect. Not too big that its a huge NHL market, but not too small that it can't accommodate the demand. Cities like Saskatoon, Regina, Quebec City, Victoria (without Vancouver), Hamilton & London (though they are too close to the GTA, so I'm more using them as a size example), Moncton, Saint John are perfect to me, though I didn't check arena sizes for those place. I even think the Soo and Sudbury co-hosting would be cool, though that may be too small.

Moncton's new arena (open Fall 2018) will hold around 8800. Harbour Station in Saint John holds 6300 (it would make for a great secondary venue).

I originally thought that the new arena would hold around 10 000, so it's smaller than I thought. It might be more of a secondary venue. Halifax/Moncton and Quebec City/Saint John would be two solid groups.

Saint John's Harbour Station has just over 6000 seats (6300) and Moncton's new downtown arena that opens next year will have 7500 seats I believe.

I would love for it to come here, even if no Canada, just as long as they don't gouge people on tickets too much. With how well the Canada/Russia series did both times at Harbour Station, I think it would be successful, even more so if there happened to be any Sea Dogs playing.

Just got tickets for USA v Slovakia tonight for $31 each after fees. Tickets are in the lower bowl...where are these overpriced tickets everyone is referring to? I was just at the box office and the most expensive seat for this evening is $75, and over 40% of the tickets are priced $40 or below.

what is the forecast for the US/Canada game tomorrow? we are having some brutal cold weather up here in New England. temps in the single digits F and well below zero windchill.

EDIT: never mind. got the question answered already

Are tickets ridiculously priced? Or is it that Toronto hockey fans are only supporting the leafs because they are watchable again?

..WINTER STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING
THROUGH SATURDAY EVENING...

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow possible. Travel may be very
difficult at times. Total snow accumulations of 1 to 2 feet are
possible
in the most persistent lake snows.

from the national weather service in buffalo

In 2011 I purchased a ticket package that put me in the lower bowl for every game at the big arena. The same package is basically 50% higher this year. The arena was packed for every Canadian game in 2011 and the attendance was definitely higher for the non-Canada games than it has been this year. I doubt that pricing is the only issue though. There is definite overexposure with this tournament in Canada, and it was always going to be Canadians that would fill the arena.

Hmm, the temperature really is a problem? "Single digit fahrenheit"? I really was expecting something actually bad after reading all the complaints but that's not even bad. if it was like under -10 fahrenheit I'd get it, but isn't that just a normal winter temperature? If it's much higher than that you don't even get proper snow. I much, much rather have single digit fahrenheit than on both sides of 30 and wet snow(Ugh!). A temperature where you get dry snow that just bounces off your clothes and doesn't stick is just about the perfect winter temperature, as long as it doesn't go down to like -15 fahrenheit.
Are you honestly saying a winter temperature of, oh, -14f is perfect?

Go to a Leaf game and you would be lucky to have any cash left to support any other hockey. Not a Leaf fan but why should they be centered out to support junior hockey in Buffalo?

As someone who lives in Moncton, yes please

If they sold out every game playing in a rink that size it would be the worst attended WJC tournament in North American history

It's not looking much worse than Buffalo, minus the outdoor game at this point. If attendances are going to be low, might as well hold them in smaller venues.

Honestly, a Moncton/Saint John WJC would be pretty comparable to the Halifax/Cape Breton year. Not sure what has changed that they have been opposed to putting the tournament in smaller locations. It's a junior hockey tournament. Put it in junior markets.
