I'm not predicting that every game would be a sell-out. But I believe that it would draw better than anywhere else in the US. Regarding Canada games, I'm sure they would be well represented being St Paul is only 5 hours south of the border.

It may be 5 hours south of the border, but nobody lives at that border. It's a 7 hour drive from Winnipeg. I'm not saying Minnesota shouldn't get it, in fact I think it would be a good location to have it, I just don't think the distance from the border will be a selling feature.

Too damn expensive $100 a ticket for the lower teams games is just madness, I wouldn't went last week but for the price

The prices are absolutely ridiculous for the 4 probably lopsided games tomorrow. I think the trend of 80%+ empty seats will continue.

No way I'm gonna pay 100 $/ticket to see some junior game. This is ridiculous. No way the prices are that high when WJC is in Europe.

Agree. The junior game has out priced itself out of the market. No way I'd pay $100 unless it was the Gold Medal game!

Interestingly enough hockey isn't as popular as it once was in Minnesota. Grass roots hockey for example took a huge hit. There were articles about this in some big thread (I believe in the business side of hockey section)--there's just too many alternatives, and not just in sport.

To me that's the biggest reason why attendance is bad--even in Canada, even in the hockey mecca of the world, people would rather be spending their entertainment dollars/time on other things whether it be sports, games, cultural events, whatever. There isn't just 1 thing to watch/go to in the city.

I suspect that has more to do with the economic trend of the game than cultural - it's just too expensive of a sport (especially if you want to play a AAA level) for a lot of families.

Hockey USA and Canada better be working on solutions to this

I assume its canadian dollars? Is it two QF games for that price or only one? If two, sounds more than reasonable. If one, surprised it isn't steeper since it is Canada, after all.

Toronto's a leafs town, not a hockey one.

Thats not exclusive to toronto but more a big city mentality. Usually larger cities = More choices and the big city crowds tend to lean towards the pro leagues.

The US has a different mentality towards the lower league because there are far more people to support it.

The ticket prices in Montreal for the Sweden-Slovakia game are completely ridiculous and it's even worst for Canada-Czech two games that should be blowouts.

Cheapest pair on StubHub is 138 usd for the Canada game. Likely to drop though. More expensive than a habs game to see a bunch of kids play...

Did they change the pricing scheme at all since the last time Toronto-Montreal hosted? I tend to remember many complaints about ticket prices then, and it continues in this tournament. I mean, one would think that the organizers should have a solid set of data to produce the ideal ticket prices by now.

I think that people are more and more unwilling to overpay for things in general not just the WJC. There are so many options for entertainment now and only so much money to go around so people are rejecting things that are overpriced. It's a natural reaction in a free market system that shouldn't be alarming or surprising to anyone.

Hockey Canada went for the home run with these two WJC's gambling on two frankly terrible junior hockey markets to come through with a big pay day and it didn't work out. No surprise here. This tournament should never have been given to Toronto and Montreal in the first place. Part of the appeal of this tournament in the past was when a smaller market rallied around it and made it special. It gets lost in the shuffle in major markets and it really takes away from it imo.

Vancouver is a big city by Canadian standards, yet I remember the world juniors being a pretty good success, with strong turnout.

I mean, Vancouver has a bit of a junior appeal with the WHL Giants but if they could make that tournament a big success, I think Montreal and Toronto can do the same, or at least much better than right now in terms of turnout. Again, I'd love to compare the marketing between Vancouver and Montreal/Toronto.

True enough but were the ticket prices in Vancouver comparable? I have no idea. And secondly, that tournament was a decade ago and Team Canada was coming off of the best and most dominant team that they ever had the previous year. That likely helped with the ticket sales.

Don't remember the exact prices but they were nowhere near what Toronto/Montreal is charging. The hype was high going into the 2006 tournament given Canada broke the gold medal drought in 2005. Calgary/Edmonton was the first time, I believe, that they started charging Stanley Cup prices, and I do remember hearing complaints, however tickets still sold.

I'll be curious to see how they market this in Vancouver, especially if they don't win gold this year or next. But on the other hand, all they have to do is bring up the Olympics, the Golden Goal, light the torch downtown and say "you need to be here, there will be cameras and instagram hashtags!!" and they'll bring out the usual Vancouver FOMO event crowd.

Keep your eye out for a massive free ticket disposal.

Tonight's game is empty.

Another completely empty arena for Russia-Denmark. Will there be a decent crowd tonight for Canada-Czech? I'm sure ain't paying 100$+ for bad seats for this one.

Personally I've got a bad time with my nephews on xmas day because they didnt have their tickets for the medals games. It was just too much money involved in a period where you have to spend somes. I make the 1st mistakes to bring this on the table 1st but Hockey Canada gets an ennemy. I will never buy stuff from them anymore. I just wish this ****** tournament will never be back in town and No sads kid faces anymore

It was discussed that the problem is with the prices. It's not that people don't care. I live about 800m away from the Bell Center and have Canadiens season tickets but I won't be going to the WJC because I find it way, way too expensive for the product. I'll watch on TV, thanks!

The WJC should be hosted in Latvia or Belarus where hockey tickets only cost 15€. Most of the games would be almost sold out. If Latvia and Belarus were regularly at the WJC's it would be cool to have Riga and Minsk host together. Plus the atmosphere is really good in Latvia and Belarus, and having Russia, Finland and Sweden nearby means that there will be a lot of fans from those countries.
