In Montreal there would be a bit more people at decent prices but still junior hockey and this tournament isn't a big thing here and the city is all about the Habs and Soccer... Never had a junior team succeed here, there's never been less hockey players and nobody plays on outside rinks anymore. RDS the network that show all the games don't even talk about it and have their worst play by play and analysts for the games and they do it in the studio not even at the Arena...

That's not true. RDS talks about it a lot. Not on the same level as the Habs but they do talk about it. Also, Stéphane Leroux is the main junior guy for them and he's been doing the WJCs for ages. It's not like they're putting random guys there. Your speculation about rinks is also false. Less people play hockey than soccer, but there is still a lot of people playing outisde at the rinks. Don't act as if people don't care about hockey here.

its pretty sad seeing 2 supposed "hockey Mecca's" struggle with getting butts in the seats...prices be damned

when the Tourny was in Edmonton, the lowest attendance was a Czech/Denmark game and 12,967 people showed up

They can take whatever label they want. The western Prairies are the heartland of hockey.

Calgary/Edmonton/Winnipeg would all fill the buildings. Calgary/Edmonton had significantly better overall attendance numbers in 2012 than the the 2015 Toronto/Montreal WJC. 2017 is looking worse than 2015.

Add in the new arena in Edmonton with more capacity and I bet the numbers would be even higher at another Calgary/Edmonton WJC. Winnipeg no doubt would also pack the arena.

The level of prospect at this years wjhc is a little underwhelming.

The preliminary games aren't that interesting. It's a lot of money to go watch Canada eviscerate its competition. More people will come out later when things start getting serious.

For those interested in international hockey, the Spengler Cup has been a lot more entertaining viewing so far. Looking forward to the Canada-USA game in the WJC, and the elimination round should be good.

RDS reporter Alexandre Tourigny is covering world junior games in Toronto. He conducted interviews with Team Canada players including Goalie Connor Ingram, Defenseman Thomas Chabot, and Head Coach Dominique Ducharme, so there is interest with the world juniors on RDS. His coverage is on his twitter handle.

I haven't watched a single game in this tourney and speaking to friends and coworkers I'm clearly not alone.

Nobody is watching this tournament so how can I call out Toronto and Montreal for not paying insane prices to watch it. Have tv ratings for all of Canada been released. Guessing tsn is trying to keep that info on the down low for obvious reasons.

love seeing the Albertans chimming in how This proves Alberta is hockey country. Such hardcore fans both Alberta teams need gov/oil/lotto money to build an arena for their billionaire owners.

Well if oil goes up by next year then Alberta can spend all that dirty money on overpriced hockey tickets.

Would we be seeing the same problems in Quebec City?

IMO, I think a QC/Halifax tournament would do exceptionally well, like they did for the Worlds in 2008.

Quebec would do better than Montreal for sure but they would need to cut those ticket prices a lot. RDS are not even at the Bell Centre for the games in Montreal. Apart from people that really follow it you wouldn't know this tournament is going on in Montreal otherwise.

The Worlds in 2008 had a lot of world class talent, exceptionnal marketing and intelligent ticket prices and also had a lot of foreign fans. World Juniors don't attract foreign fans much.

see earlier posts about quebec not having a local team, as 1/3 don't feel they are part of Canada.

not sure quebec city would be any better than montreal.

Halifax would be a great location however!

And I would agree so far the Spengler Cup has been far more entertaining with offensive almost 80's style hockey while the world juniors have been blowouts or very low quality games.

The world juniors isn't really a marquee event for Toronto (even Montreal I guess) like it would be for a smaller city like Edmonton. It's price liked one though lol

Since the first World Junior in 1974 Quebec has never had it...maybe it shows they don't care much either. I'd say a little more people would show up than in Montreal but at those prices it would be terrible also.

The argument that we don't have a real national team is complete BS. People follow the habs and there's not been any Quebec talent for years on it. That's a lazy and false excuse. As was seen at the Worlds in 2008 the people of Quebec really got behind Team Canada...

Low interest for this tournament and hockey in general except the Habs and ridiculous ticket prices are the two obivous reasons for the complete failure in Montreal.

45 dollars to see Canada Latvia

by game time I'm sure tickets will be 25 bucks each.

I'm starting to wonder if secondary market ticket purchasing is a foreign concept (pardon the pun) to those in Quebec.

It's not how 99% of people buy their tickets and they shouldn't have to either. It seems it's the case in Toronto also with thousands and thousands of empty seats even for Canada.

It's easier to blame the organizers than to consider that maybe their city isn't the great hockey market they've assumed.

Nobody will tell you that Montreal is a great hockey city, everyone here knows were only a Habs town. Never had a junior team, of course no ahl team, less and less hockey players and almost nobody on the outside rinks. When the Habs are out of the playoffs the ratings almost drop down to nothing on RDS-TVA.
