Don't know about the numbers and the dollars but Toronto hockey fans are lame. They bring zero excitement to the game they just sit there.Too sophisticated for minor league sports. The 100 or so Argo fans are no different they just sit on their wallets.

I've never been a fan of holding these tournaments in big city Canada. They don't care. Give the games back to the true supporters of junior hockey. Kelowna, Red Deer, London, the Sault, Gatineau and Moncton etc.

There was more people in Montreal for the roller hockey team in 1996-1997 and more people at the Pee-Wee tournament in Quebec!

As a Toronto fan I agree that they should hold the tournament elsewhere, or at least if they do come here it should only be once every ten or fifteen years, something like that.

I don't think the issue is that Toronto fans see themselves as 'too sophisticated' for minor league sports. I believe it's that there are just so many entertainment options out there, not just sports. You can have a day where the Leafs, Raptors, and Toronto FC are all playing (not all at home at the same time), and there's a big concert at the ACC or the Dome, there are festivals every weekend, malls, restaurants, clubs, etc. Junior hockey is way down the list.

Sorry but why do you have to drag Malmö into your joke haha. 5% sounds realistic to me considering it's probably that amount of people in Malmö that even knows what hockey is. Blame the people in charge for selecting bad places to host the tournament.

Malmö is/was a great host for the WJC. The entire event was brilliant and the stadium is the absolute best in the entirety of Scandinavia.
Had I lived there I would have gone to as many games as possible. But lets remember that Malmö has a population of 300,000 people. Compare that to Montreal.
The attendance overall was a succes and it was all held in Malmö. Not split between two of the largest hockey cities in the world.

I went to the 4 games in Montreal over the last 2 days. I paid 6$ for every ticket (plus US dollar conversion, fees , taxes, etc). It ended up costing me 11$ per game. My tickets were all in the 2nd deck. When I tried to get to my seat, I was told that the section was closed and they gave me a better seat every time.

That was totally worth it.

How was the experience at the game? How did it look with so little people in a big 21 000+ stadium? Was the crowd there at least excited? How's the beer price at the moment? Did they asked the crowd to make some noise?

And I repeat RDS the Montreal broadcaster doesn't even have the play by play guys at the Arena they are in the Studio!

I am not sure if this is true, but I find that RDS seems to be talking more about the Habs, and less about the World Jrs unlike their Anglo counterparts from TSN that treats the tournament every year like if its junior hockey's version of the Super Bowl with its promos and vignettes with #HereWeGo last year, and the "Coming Home" video with the TSN hockey panel, play by play, and commentators talking in the background of the commercial.

Yes RDS it's Habs all the time. They don't send their best duo to do the Canada games, and the second duo for the games in Montreal are in the RDS STUDIO instead of at the Bell Centre just around the street! They do nothing to promote this tournament at all...

I guess the concession prices were the same as usual. I don't buy anything in an arena. My brother ended up buying a 4$ hot dog if I remember correctly. The atmosphere was good. There were a surprising number of foreign supporters who ended up making the trip. For instance, I was sitting near a group of Czechs who were loudly supporting their country. I saw a bunch of flags and jerseys of every country involved. If only I lived in Montreal, I would have attended more games.

Seeing how those cities you mentioned and places like halifax love their junior hockey, I can only support this notion.

But if canada is anything like every other country in the world, there will be so much power in the big cities that this will never happen.

the world juniors is just a little bit overhyped. I mean does anybody really care about the games unless it's Canada vs Russia or Canada vs the US? Slovakia managed 6 shots against us last night like who really wants to pay money to go watch that game?

Well at the Bell Centre (I was there for FIN-DEN), they did close the upper levels, so 100's and 200's were available. But then again, they had regular pricing for concessions which is stupid. Had free tickets (for 4), paid 20$ for parking a few blocks away, didn't buy anything there.

I had incredible tickets (4 rows from the benches), but there was little to no atmosphere, which is a shame. I live in Gatineau (Ottawa), so too far to just buy tix and go anytime, but I have friends who got first row tickets for 25$ off Stubhub, so the pricing is bad but there are ways around it. No way the concessions should be this bad, though.

Saskatoon as well, there are some junior barns that can hold a decent crowd, but with the potential to make more money it will most likely be in NHL barns here on out. That 2010 tournament was awesome in Saskatoon. The energy and passion was terrific. I know there is a lot of people in the States that don't know of this tournament but believe me it's growing. There are a lot of fans getting into this over the past 5 years or so. I think the turnout in future years of USA fans will be better. Canadians will still buy up most tickets for the US Canada games though.

Saddledome did 15,390 for Russia v Switzerland on Boxing Day

Rexall did 13604 for US v Denmark on Boxing Day (although this was immediately after the sold out Canada game)

Rexall also did 13k for Czech v Denmark in the only game of the day.

Were the prices more reasonable in Alberta? I don't remember them being cheap

and yet at better price point for tickets the Southern Ontario fans flocked to Buffalo a few years ago. Lets see now with their more expensive ticket packages what the crowds will be!
I know that this yrs and next yrs in Buffalo will be the first ones that are close to me that Im missing. Also another factor is our lovely Premier of Ontario has brought in all these new taxes and hydro increases that have a lot of ppl starting to penny pinch (I know i am)

I went to Canada vs. Denmark which was around $200 at Rexall (lower bowl near glass), if I remember correctly.

Prices for matches on stubhub are around $10-25... I don't see why people keep saying prices are insane. Yes, maybe for Canada games. The fact is MTL and TOR just aren't that passionate about junior hockey. Ottawa/Calgary/Edmonton/Vancouver have done a much better job.

The IIHF are simply greedy and the tickets at the Bell Centre were ridiculously overpriced. In cities like Toronto and Montreal, organizers need to understand that they're constantly competing against other entertainment options.

Do you spend $120 to see Switzerland vs Sweden on your day off during the holidays with you SO or do you go on a date night to a good restaurant, then go see a cool show, and have drinks? After all, it's Christmas season, people spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on gifts and Boxing Day and WJC games simply aren't an affordable entertainment option, at least in Montreal.

IIHF also failed pathetically in their marketing efforts. I have friends who are hockey fans who didn't even know that the WJC were being held in Montreal. I never saw any ads in the metro or on TV. I remember seeing some posters on a board near a construction site. Seriously.

IIHF has nothing to do with this. It's all about Hockey Canada and the local organising committee. The last time it was here the head of IIHF himself said the ticket prices were way out of line. RDS who show the games here don't even talk about it and have their worst commentary duo in the studio for the games...

I can't speak for Montreal but every seat (including Latvia vs Slovakia) in Toronto would be filled if prices were reasonable. Toronto's NHL prices are already the highest in the league and their WJC tickets aren't far behind. If TO's prices were closer to their AHL rates, I'd have sent my kids to every game they hosted for this tournament. As things stand, we've enjoyed every game from the comfort of our living room. When a decent seat for an amateur sporting event costs more than a new snow tire, I'd rather have the snow tire.
