Lets say your team is shopping around for a top 6 C. Both Horvat and Larkin are demanding something comparable (7 year contract).

Both players, want to sign with your team. But you can only sign one due to cap space availability.

Which premier 2023 center UFA would you pick?

what gives Larkin the edge? again forget about age, contract demands

Just in terms of skills/leadership etc

Larkin is a better play driver and distributor that is less reliant on being a focal point of the PP to put up points. Horvat is better on faceoffs, but don’t confuse that as being a better two way player. Horvat is a better offensive threat down around the net. While it’s not all Horvat’s fault at all, I think Larkin should get points for captaining a team that doesn’t have well publicized divisions and issues.

He's peaked higher than Bo has at an earlier age which is my reason for taking him.

I think the comparison between these two is apt because they have similar production on mediocre teams. I want to see Horvat as a rental trade because he would probably explode on a cup contender on a contract year. Like the Avs or Bruins.

Larkin is a top 5 speedster in the league, A solid 200 foot player Career average of 0.72 over an 82 game schedule during his career. Until this season Horvat had one 61 point season. Larkin has 73, 69 and 63 plus is on pace for 76 this year. Plus Larkin is a year younger than Horvat. I would take Larkin over Horvat any day of the year.

No dog in this race, but Larkin kind of popped early and then plateaued for a number of years. He's never popped like 28 goals in 38 games like Horvat either.

Horvat is only a year older being a 1995 born and a 2013 pick.

Horvat is shooting at 24%. That's not going to continue.

Larkin is the much better play driver and has been more productive throughout his career.

Canucks fan saying Larkin as of right now.

I questions concerning Horvat’s defensive game but he has yet to play in his prime for a team with a competent coach and competent defense.

They’re close enough that a change of scenery could change my opinion.

Yeah I think either one of these guys could reach a new level getting into a better environment. Or not.

larkin is better but i can see bad gms being duped into paying horvat more because of 'intangibles' (read: canadian, square jaw)

Not saying Horvat doesn't have this in him, but he has been blessed with some decent top 6 forwards over his career in Van (despite how shitty the team overall is, and compared to Detroit's forwards).

I have seen Larkin play numerous seasons now, without that luxury. and while scoring points, and while not giving up on a season when it's clear they don't stand a chance of making playoffs. All while saying all the right things in the media.

Now Horvat has shown he is of that ilk for sure, as Canucks are not that great of a team either, and he always plays hard. But I'll go with what I've seen so far, and not what I THINK the other player could have done in the same situation

I can understand the contract demands part as the premise in your OP is that they would sign for similar amounts. But with the overall premise, age absolutely matters - even if it's just one year.

Horvat's wingers have been crap for most of his career, with the likes of Baertschi, Dorsett, Roussel, Pearson, and washed up Louie Eriksson. He hasn't played much at 5v5 with either EP or Miller, or even Boeser (when he was actually good). He's played with better talent since Boudreau took over, and that's when Horvat's scoring rate jumped up. I think I'd rather "build" around Larkin because I think he's the better puck distributer, but if adding a piece for a cup run, I think Horvat would be the way to go. Guy has been money in the playoffs, is built like a truck, and his last calendar year makes him roughly a 50 goal scorer.
