Cannot believe Toe Blake the legendary player doesn’t have his # retired… let alone the coach

We need to stop retiring numbers except for generational players.
Price was a generational player

What about Desharnais? Plekanec? Markov? Kovalev? All fan favorites. We can just retire all the number and start using letters.

No more retired numbers, and someday all the numbers should be returned to the ice. Even 4, 9, and 10.
No way. There's plenty enough numbers to go by.

I'd puke if I saw some 3rd liner wear 9. 9 is the most sacred of them all, but 10 and 4 are almost as iconic. And imo all the retired numbers are deserving. If Chicago retires Seabrook's, how is Savard #18 for example not worthy? The most borderline imo is 3 but even then I'd keep it retired.

Legitimately the best goalie of his generation. Not sure what else counts as generational for goalies if Price isn't it. His statistics and advanced metrics put him above legends like Roy or Brodeur.

Retiring a number comes with a simple question. If another player wears #31 will they be able to make their own career or will they be constantly compared to Carey Price? Nobody touched 33 after Roy wore it for that reason. Nobody touched 19 after Robinson. That's the real sign a number should be retired.

When Toe Blake retired, he was the second all time leading scorer in NHL history. #6 should have been recognized long ago or at least with the wave of numbers retired ~15 years ago.

Alexei Kovalev won't have his number retired since his prime was in Pittsburgh and New York but he should be in the Hall of Fame.

Lacking a neither option.

There are way too many numbers retired already thanks to Gillett who wanted to maximize the club's value before selling it.

If it were up to me , only #7 and maybe #9 would be retired.
Explain to me how George Gillett had to do anything with those retired numbers? He was a pretty hands off owner.

Gillett recognized the importance of selling the Habs brand which wasn’t being leveraged under Molson Breweries. His entire focus as Habs owner was to put the Habs brand front & center which included a strong focus on the history.

Just look at the sheer amount of numbers retired during Gillett’s tenure vs before.

In his 7 year career, Bill Durnan won 2 cups 6 vezina trophies, was 1st all star 6 times and was captain or assistant captain of the team for awhile. He was the first rookie to win the Vezina with a record of 38-5-7 2.18 gaa. He then went 8-1 in the playoffs that season to help lead the Habs to their first cup in 13 years. For me that is arguably as impressive as Ken Dryden's career. Durnan has not been recognized, which would not be hard to do since #1 is already retired for Jacques Plante.
