You can still get a good pick even if you don't draft top 5 or even top 10. Let's say we make the playoffs or come close or short by a little it will be the job of the scouts ti find another good player wherever the position the team draft. It's certainly easier to get a top prospect with a top pick but it's not impossible to get an impact guy with a mid or low pick. Caufield was 15th , Hutson 2nd round , Subban 2nd round , Pacioretty 22th overall etc. Hell one could argue that as of today Hutson is the real 1st overall of the 2022 draft. That's the type of homerun you need to it if you don't draft high.

It's nice to give the players support for the playoffs. Armia is a good playoff guy that knows how to play that style of game. If Beck is coming in, he and Heineman can learn a lot from these guys. It's not always about picks.

Impressive about the win last night:
The Montreal goalie did not dominate but simply made a few key saves.
It seemed like the "old" Habs were primarily winning when the goalies were superhuman.
Good to see the team playing with more confidence and not relying on one player to bail them out.

That’s an important point. It’s been 30 years that goalies have been saving our ass. Nowhere more than in Montreal. It’s a breath of fresh air to see the players saving the goalie’s ass for once.

Anderson and Gallagher have cooled off recently. They both only have 5 points in the past 20 games after putting up 10 and 12 respectively in the first 20 games. So that's a negative, however this factoid disputes the assertions by some that we are only winning because of vets and not the young guys so is also slightly positive for the rebuild.

Would love it if some of you actually admitted Slafkovsky has been bad at times this season. From my experience it seems whenever players coaches or managers are criticised for performance there is a legion of Habs zealots who would find every excuse in the world to dismiss the criticism and contextualize whatever they can.

We see with this team that having bottom 6 players dedicated to PK is gold. It's not a "passage obligé", it's a real task and it should show the youngsters about the importance of that role, for the future.

Well, despite being in a playoff spot, the Canadiens are still only 4 pts up from drafting 5th overall again. 6 pts back of 4th.

Still a long way to go, but I like cheering for the team again.

The most important thing for me is just the quality of our TEAM play over the last 10 games or so.
No excuses noses to the grindstone. My hope was for a .500 team and a flat goal differential.
There are some amazing stories evolving which is enough to keep me riveted.

Lots of relevant matchups today.

Detroit vs Ottawa is a big one. Detroit is hot too riding their coaching bump and a Detroit win would just make the pack even tighter.


Blue jackets and Penguins is another big one.

Boston faces the Oilers. Another loss here and they really should be sweating because they are getting real close to this pack of teams fighting for the playoffs.

Any way you slice it, montreal will lose their wild card position tonight, but I'm mainly hoping for sens and bruins to lose, as that continues to open more paths for montreal.

There’s a difference between wanting more from him and just lying about his record and his contributions so far. I’m just not overly worried.

Since when is contextualizing bad? Hardly any analysis, if any, is meaningful without context, including quantitative comparisons. What is vital, I think, is to shift the discussion away from evaluating Slaf against first overalls, given no fans viewed him as generational, and given its a moot point, as he's already on the club and has a contract for next 8 years. Finding a means of evaluating him that is proportional to what he is as a player, and what we can expect in the coming years, is the challenge. He is currently fourth among forwards in points as a 20 year old. I'm optimistic he will improve with age and experience.

But if it assuages your desire to hear it, yes Slaf has been bad at times this season, and yet saying this achieves very little in terms of analysis without establishing expectations and putting it into context.
