I think the extended value in of spending what he did on Giordano, is that it gives Toronto the inside track to get him re-signed for about $1 million a year, for two years after this one, on one year deals. You integrate him into the roster now, rather than risk him wanting to come home in the off season, but having him go elsewhere because they throw a couple million dollars at him, where as you want to get him cheap. I think there is something to be said about getting a player into your realm of influence.
You make some very good points and could be correct, I don’t like the asset cost for this but that might just be me.

Our top 2 lines assuming they play at their best can go up against anybody. 2nd line needs to figure it out.
Our 3rd line is one of the best in the league.
Our 4th line is bad, but adding Blackwell who can play in different spots is an upgrade, and you give the kids chances.

Our top 4 on D rivals any team. We have literally 4-5 guys who can play shutdown roles, and mix and match with the d men. Solid depth with Liljegren and whoever sits out.

Now goalie. If and big if Jack returns to form, I feel fine. If not then we are in trouble.

The East is beastly. All 8 playoff teams are good. It may come down to matchups. COL and CGY look like they might smooth sail to the West final!

A lot of people fret over us not doing much at the deadlines... but look at the amazing players we have that no one else does. Matthews and Marner are unique and ours. I think the addition of the 'beef' we've made will do us well.

Two concerns remain, 2nd line... it sucks. Goaltending, what do we have; all we need is some consistent average NHL goaltending.

The final stretch should help clarify things.
Agreed on the goaltending, time will tell, but the 2nd line, though not producing, isn't a liability. They still push the play away from our net and create chances for.
I might be in the minority here but I'm thinking Blackwell will be tried I. That line too. If he has the bunting effect on that line our 1 2 3 pinch becomes very potent

Mrazek

Still need to figure out our 4th line.
1st round exit, coming up.

I'm happy. Didn't lose a whole lot, have 3 guys who will most likely stick around and assuming gio has a couple years left he will be in for basically minimum.

There are no right moves at the tdl in Toronto with our fan base. Bottom line with this bunch is no matter what you do unless the leafs win a cup, management are idiots and our big four need to be shipped.

The defense looks good. Have some faith in soup. Kall looks like he can manage what we need as a backup. The boys are all a year older and every single year they get more gritty and emotional. No matter what they did this year our path out of this 1st round is arguably the hardest yet.

I will have faith till the end.

Go Leafs Go!!

it is a loser's attitude.

The big-4 is in their prime and they think they can just write off years because it's "not their time?"

Who the f*** knows if Auston is still even here in 3 years.

Or, hear me out, if you are going to spend a lot of assets, why not do it next year or the year after? Florida has a thin collection of assets and some contracts go up next year, Tampa is also very low on assets. If you want Toronto to spend three 1sts and a couple of top prospects, they will have a better shot doing it next year or the year after.

I think the biggest thing about the 2nd line looking awful is that the 1st looks godly! It's like when the Bruins had the perfection line going, do you remember who else even played for them?

Anyone think Knies or Abruezze could steal a spot in the line up?

I'd really like Abruezze or Steeves to play 3C to slide Kampf to 4C and Spezza to 4RW.

I'm personally disappointed we didn't deal Engvall, now we're gonna be forced to play him

Despise that second line

We are going to struggle to score in the playoffs

I suppose they’re going to give Knies a shot as well but he’s unlikely to be on the roster long
Dubas said in his presser they don't have/aren't going to waste cap space signing "college guys" this year.

They’re a good team, but trying to win with a goalie who has never had a full season of consistent play and has never sniffed playoff success is quite a gamble.

If the second line is struggling I'd like to see Bunting on it with JT and Willy. Makes the 1st line worse but if it can help the 2nd line a lot why not. Bunting could really help that line. Insert whoever with Matthews/Marner honestly, Blackwell/kerf/knies/Robertson etc...

That's a fair assessment. That 1st line is the lynch pin for the playoffs. If they can dominate in the playoffs the way they have in the regular season, we should win a couple rounds at least.
Imo all they need is that killer instinct. The 3-1 series lead seems to lull them into the "we got this" mindset and that don't jive in playoffs.

I actually agree with this attitude. Sometimes you have to be aware enough of where you actually sit compared to your competition and decide whether or not it's worth going all in that particular year. In some cases you're better time it into the summer, or keep the assets for the following deadline.

I don't think the Leafs goaltending is good enough this year. I think they're a true top 6 forward short. I think they're still a quality defenseman short and having Sandin out now also hurts... To fix all of that at one deadline, in a meaningful way, would empty our cupboard, and, again, I still don't think I'd like our roster better than some of our divisional rivals this years.

Any reason why we’re looking at knies over our top Marlies performers?
Shiny new toy/savior syndrome that Leaf fans are famous for. There's always someone not on the roster that is thought to be better than those on the roster. They usually aren't

That's not very likely, but not impossible.
To ask either of them to jump into playoff hockey is a very steep learning curve, especially if you assume we play Tb of the panthers

Timing is everything in sports. When the Raptors won, yes the got Kawhi but LeBron had also just left the East, making the Conference wide open.

Sure, the Leafs could’ve blown through assets to get another goalie and/or forward, but as they stand they are a strong team with what we had and the recent additions. Goaltending is a massive question mark but that position is rarely filled mid-season.

After all the assets Florida and Tampa spent this season, it’s unlike they’ll be able to be big buyers next year, which means the Leafs could outbid them on any available players next year.

Knies has looked really good playing again men too.
