I always find it interesting when a player plays in one world junior tournament, is eligible to come back in a future year (usually the next), and doesn't make the team. I'm not talking about players who missed a tournament due to injury (e.g. Anton Lundell in 2020), but instead players who were simply cut from training camp after playing the year before.

Here are a few I can think of off the top of my head:

Leland Irving (2008)
Chris Bigras (2015)
Aatu Raty (2021)
Patrik Puistola (2021)

I'd love to hear about more instances this has happened if you guys can think of any.

Just found the most interesting one yet... Chad Krys played in 2016 for the USA and was eligible for both the '17 and '18 tournaments but didn't play in either of them.

This year on Slovakia, Andrej Golian (now of the Tri-City Americans), made the team, was cut the next year, and made the team this year. Maxim Cajkovik was on Slovakia last year, cut this year due to disciplinary reasons, namely a couple of hits thrown during intersquad games.

Teemu Laine is a similar case for Finland. Played as U18 player in 2000, not in the team in following two years. He was second-round-pick for Devils in 2000, never signed a contract but in the end had a decent career in Europe.
