Are there any examples of this throughout the history of the tournament?... Like made the team as 16-18 year old but not when it's "their" year, at 19 that is.

Or maybe you made the team as an 18 year old and played on the first line but then the progression wasn't there so you made the team the following year but played limited minutes

Seems like if you made the team as an under-ager you always play the following year(s) ?

Chris Bigras immediately comes to mind. I'm sure there are others.

For Canada anyways, it's happened very rarely. If you are eligible to return, and are released, no matter how you've progressed you are usually there.

Yup, pretty sure Bigras was the first skater to have this happen.

I know it has happened in net before - Brian Finley, I believe. Also, Leland Irving got cut after backing up Price.

I can think of three for Canada...

2015 - Chris Bigras. Had a bad camp and got cut. Probably should have been on the team over Hicketts or Heatherington, but they won gold without him.

2008 - Leland Irving. Outplayed by better goaltenders in Bernier and Mason. Canada won without him.

1990 - Reggie Savage. Canada's second leading scorer at the 1989 tournament, but he regressed in 1990. The 1990 team struggled offensively but pulled out a lucky gold medal without him.

Finley was injured in 2001.

Pontus Ã…berg, he was injured in a pre-tournament game at 18. Didn't make the team at 19.

Chris Bigras. Probably the 2nd best defenseman in junior hockey last year after DeAngelo but hey, Canada won gold without him so I wont even question the choice.

If my memory is good, MArek Hrivik (now at Rangers AHL farm team) played as a 17-years old. But the next season he was not welcome by the same coach.
But he played as a 19-years old boy again.

Ryan Collins also played last year for the team USA and got cut off this year.

Just because you are the best player at a position doesnt automatically mean you are a lock for the WJ team....its chemistry among others things that matter more...

Kylington Made the team as a double underager last year but got injured and missed the toirnament because of it. Didnt make it this year.

Kylington was so highly touted coming into his draft year. Huge drop in his stock. Unbelievable.
