In 2022 UFA John Klingberg reportedly turned down a long term offer from the Stars that was said to be in the neighborhood of 56 million dollars over 8 years(Jeff Marek). Believing John could hold out for more money after seeing what Seth Jones and Darnell Nurse got, his agent advised him to turn it down and push for an AAV closer to 8 million per. Well that never materialized and 2 weeks later Klingberg fired his agent before agreeing to a one year 7 million dollar deal with Anaheim.

He is now a UFA again and while not having a disastrous season on the ice with 34pts in 67GP, it would be hard to imagine he's going to be receiving any long term 50+ million dollar contract offers. What are some other examples of players that blew their chances of making long term big money and had to settle for much less?

Dominic Moore had an offer in Toronto ($1.8M) and instead wanted more ($2.7M-$3.5M), got dealt at the deadline and never approached the amount of the Leaf deal IIRC.

Thomas Vanek turned down something around 7 years, 50 million from the Islanders. Vanek took a hometown discount to sign for 3 year, 19.5 million with Minnesota. After having the final year bought out, Vanek signed three consecutive 1 year deals to finish out his NHL career. On the bright side, Vanek should have more than enough money from his second contract.

The sad part about Klingberg is that he turned down 7M/year in a "no state tax" state to then get 7M from Anaheim in a top 3 state tax states. Talk about losing money all around. Sometimes players just don't understand those kinds of economic decisions and, of course, sometimes the agents are pretty bad at that too.

ERod turned down 3 x $3.5 mill and ended up with a 1 x $2mill contract
If that was $3.5M over 3 years and not per season then that's actually not too bad, considering if he performed in that 1 year deal he could command more money on a 2+ year deal after that and end up ahead of the initial offer

Yeah, if it was 3.5 total not 10.5 then even two years at league minimum gets him a little more money by the end of three years.

You can put random math symbols into sentences and be lazy or you could speak English and say "per season", either way.

Years per Caphit is how most of this forum discusses contracts You've been here since 2011 and should know this, instead of spending your time being rude to other posters. The following are the popular uses

4x3
4 x 3 mill
4 years @ 3 mill

Why did Jim Nill offer him this?

Not sure exact dollars, but I remember hearing Martin Biron messed up.

He wanted a massive contract with term and ended up signing late July for 1 year with Isles for 1.4mil. Then after a shit year ended up with 2 year deal at 875k per.

Essentially never read the market correctly and got greedy when there were a lot of other guys available and was left to take a backup role.

I want to say Ryan Dzingle turned down something like 5x4 from Ottawa for an extension back in 2019. Not sure of the exact dollars but it's a hell of a lot more than he ended up getting going forward.

Instead he gets traded to Columbus, disappoints in the playoffs, signs a 2 year deal in Carolina where he doesn't fit and is constantly in and out of the lineup, then signs 2 one-year deals (one in AZ, one back with the Canes) at or near league minimum after that including this past year with the explicit purpose of playing for the Chicago Wolves.

I could be wrong but I believe due to Covid and flat cap, Taylor Hall wasn’t getting big offers and gambled on having a big season with Eichel and that team ended up being a disaster. Not mostly his fault but gambling on Buffalo was definitely a blunder on his part.

Feel bad for Cody Franson. He seemed like the type of a defenceman that would be overpaid and anchor but he never got that honor.
