Been noticing it for a while, but somehow a rather recent trend. I feel it happens very often that when a player scores, he puts his glove to his mouth to spit his mouthpiece out...dunno if it's just a cool/trendy thing or if it has some purposes. Whats up with that?

PS - yeah, it's offseason.

I’ve noticed this too. I’ve also noticed that way more players are wearing mouth guards these days than in past decades. Not sure how much good they do.

I'd be doing this. Yeah you can shout "HERE" GO GO GO with your mouthpiece in, but it can be a little garbled. If there was a sweet one-timer or give and go and I wanna give props or discuss asap, im taking it out to speak clearly.

Yeah but I mean they don't remove it during play, when they need to shout and communicate to their teammates on the ice...

Normally they fit rather tight and you can scream and talk without much issues

During play "Go here", "I'm open", "Heads up", "Wilsons on"
Between plays = actual conversations

Clearly a difference

It actually looks gross, not like a celebration. I think guys just find it uncomfortable to talk with it in.

A lot of junior leagues now require mouth guards so they are used to them by the time they reach the NHL and keep wearing them.

It's just like in Spider-Man 3, where everyone kept inexplicably taking their masks off in the middle of fights to show their faces, defying everything we knew about superhero rules and confirming everything we know about IRL human greed, which is my roundabout way of saying, I hate everything about this.

*curls up into a ball and slowly rolls away*

Some guys like Matt Tkachuk and Robert Thomas barely wear it properly even during play. It's more of a chew toy than a mouth guard for some of these guys.

I think they take it out so they don’t have it fall out and down their gizzards as they let out that all important woo to declare dominance over their opponents. Imagine choking on ice, shit would be so embarrassing.

It's not just in hockey. Watch some NFL highlights. The first thing a QB does after throwing a TD is stick his mouthpiece to the side of his helmet to go celebrate. Mouthpieces are not comfortable.

Mouthguards serve their purpose, but they’re not something you want inside your mouth unless they need to be there. Uncomfortable and awkward to speak through.

I don’t think it’s part of a celly, it’s that the player has a reflex to get it out of the way when he’s about to say something.

I think alot of players just use it for something to chew on, its like wearing a mask just over your mouth and not over your mouth and nose, they aren't doing shit for protection.

I didn't notice that trend. The trend I did notice is players skating on one foot after scoring which is akin to the position dogs take when they pee.

It's the same reason they all do the same one-footed sort coasting stop going to the bench of a lazy line change.

Swagger and style don't need no reason. It is the reason.
