Im the captain of a lower level league with alot of beginning and entusiastic players. I was thinking of giving out some sort of Player Of The Game award for each game. I thought it might be fun to have a physical award (like a golden puck or a "Player of the game" gold medal that's engraved, or something) that I would give out in the locker room after each game. My plan is to give it out to different players each week. It wouldnt always be the best skilled player; sometimes it would be for a great block, or just general hustle during the game. They could hang on to it all week and then give it back before the start of the following game. I just thought that maybe this would be a good team building thing to do, since there's gonna be alot of new guys that dont know eachother, and it could motivate players to play harder to try to get the award. Is this really corny, or does it sound like something fun the guys might enjoy? Does anybody else's teams do something like this? If so, Id be interested in knowing exactly what kind of physical award is given out.

None of my current teams do so, unless you want to count the first beer award.

Filled in for one team that did this award. They had a little bobble head hockey figure with fake bruises and such that they give out to the player of the game. I was going to win it, but since I was a sub they just gave me the nod.

Just come up with something creative. Doesn't need to be an actual trophy. Funky hat, slinky, whatever.

It's a fun idea and good for the captain and for morale. Sometimes we steal the game puck (if it's from the other team) and give it to the MVP. But the funny hat/whatever bit would be a good idea too.

I do like the "first beer" idea if you're having beers afterwards.

It definitely sounds like a fun idea. Glad you started this thread. A guy on my team brought up doing this a week or so ago. After kicking some ideas around, we're still undecided (or just lazy). Some of the ideas were coloring an old helmet with gold spray paint, making some kind of trophy with a puck, or passing around a mullet wig since our team name is Sick Flow.

We hand out tall boys for the three stars of the game after a win in addition to the regular beers. Every now and then someone will bring a tall boy version of smirnoff ice and award it the the dumbest play of the game or in one case manages to get stripped of the puck on a breakaway by a ghost.

OH THAT'S BRILLIANT

I would add Bud Light Clamato to that mix. Or Bud Light Limearita.

Its a good idea. Let the winner of the previous week give it to the next winner though.

One of my teams has a hard hat and the other has a sombrero. It is a fun tradition and something to motivate people, as silly as it is!

We had the Pink Socks award for Player Deemed most Detrimental to the Game. Dude/Gal had to wear the pink socks for the next game and bring beer. As a consolation, they were also responsible for picking the next recipient of the socks.

So yeah.. basically highlighting ****** play versus rewarding good play. We did it for about 2 years which is about 4 seasons worth and a few tournies. It ended up slowly becoming a negative thing and finally someone who had "earned" them said screw this and tossed them in the trash. Those damn things were pretty much the catalyst for our slide from the upper echelons of mediocrity to absolute ineptitude.

One of my first managers told me "praise in public, scold in private".

Love the idea of calling out MVP's or great teammates.

Love the idea of self-deprecating humor or inside jokes.

HATE the idea of any kind of put-downs in front of others. Even as a joke, that can be grating.

Yeah, I would hate that. First of all, as it is I know I'm not a great player. I'm a beginner. I'm learning - and I'm going to make mistakes. Some of my teammates are also new to the sport, and we are all going to have stupid moves from time to time. Calling me out in front of everyone is NOT going to make me stop making mistakes - it's just going to make me not want to play at all.

Second, if you make a stupid move, you're probably already beating yourself over it enough without having it pointed out after the fact. The fastest way to learn NOT to do something is to make the mistake and realize that it costs the team something. In my first game, I made two stupid passes that went in front of our net. Hearing 'don't make passes in front of our own net' didn't drive home the point nearly as much as realizing that our goalie had to make two saves because of my boneheaded passes did. Sure, he made the saves and it didn't cost us the game - but it COULD have and just knowing he had to deal with my mistake was bad enough. I haven't done it since.

Third, I wouldn't ever want the responsibility of passing on the bad stuff to anyone else. I've got no problem giving people constructive criticism, but to call them out on something? No thanks.

No player of the game beers?

Since people have mentioned awards for embarrasing plays, I'll share what my team does. We have a ridiculous looking red 1980's cooper helmet like this one:

It also has a sticker on it that says "gay luv 4 me"

Whenever someone falls over or does something embarrassing in a game or practice they have to wear the "red lid" during practice until someone else does something that warrants the passing over of the "red lid"

It would be cool to award someone a player of the game award that they could wear for the next game. Similar to the flame uni/helmet players got to wear for being the top point scorer for their european team during the lockout.

Hahahahahaha.

I have that helmet, it's even red, and have been wearing it for 25 years. There's nothing ridiculous about it. My cage is held on by rusted in bolts and it's covered in 2 decades of puck marks. Mine is a badge of honour.

The hockey world doesn't like nostalgia, I guess.

The whole reason we have it is for nostalgia, my player-coach practices wearing an old blue jofa Gretzky lid with Oilers logo and #99 on it

What makes the red lid look more ridiculous is that it doesn't fit anyone, and we don't let them adjust it

We've also found a cage to put on it because the under 18 players who practice with us were getting away with falling over for far too long

we do it on our mens league team, then it is the responsibility of the current holder of the "POG Medal" to choose who they give it too next. this takes all the onus and homerism and favorites accusations off of the captain and voting etc. sole discretion of the current holder. Everyone loves it they wear it out pregame drinking, after hockey drinking

One of my teams has a mandatory check in before every game so that rosters can be made ahead of time.

If you don't check in twice, the third game you play you'll need to wear a grass skirt for the warm ups.

No one has worn it yet and we've had very few issues in regards to getting people to check in before hand.

Man, that encompasses about half of what is said in our locker room. Bustin' yambags...

Just started one last night. We are sponsored by a local beer company and get 12 - 24oz beers for every game. Lucky us, only 11 players on the team, so we vote for the best player of the night and they get the extra beer. It's proving to be good motivation.

My team passes around the DVD of Youngblood to each other after every win. The guy who wins it keeps it until our next win and he decides who gets it for that game. As the captain it's nice not to have to choose the winner each win b/c then it feels more liken it is coming from the team as opposed from me.

It's best if a 'tradition' just comes about, and it not forced.

Look for an inside joke, whether its about a player on your team, player on a different team, a ref, etc...

We actually had a mug that had a stupid quote that an old teammate used to say on it. We thought it was hilarious. PoG would drink their beer out of it that night.

Also had a team do the 'red helmet' mentioned earlier, but ours was a yellow Jofa you had to wear in warm ups.

Used to have a box of Captain Crunch cereal that went to the guy with the biggest hit, then a team colored shovel "the grave digger" for the same thing.

Now we have a toy foam hulk fist.
