Placement of the “C” on Jersey

Usually it’s on the upper left side of the chest, which IMO looks better. But why do some teams put it on the upper right side? I find it doesn’t look good on the right, like it’s less visible for some season. I noticed during Yzerman’s time as Captain it was on the left, but then when Lidstrom and Zetterberg took over, they placed it on the right. Anyone know why?

The letter "C" or "A" is attached to the jersey of the team's captain and alternate captains (commonly sewn at higher levels of play, though removable insignia exist so the "C" or "A" designation can be easily changed). The designation is traditionally placed on the left side of the sweater, though the IIHF, NHL and NCAA rules specify only that it must be in a "conspicuous location on the front" of the player's sweater.[2][3][8] Two teams in the NHL have sweaters where the positioning of the crest on the front leaves insufficient space on the left for the letter: the Detroit Red Wings, who place the letter on the right side of the home and road jerseys since the 2007–08 season, and the Arizona Coyotes, who moved their captains' patches to the right side when they updated their uniforms in 2015–16.

The Wings switched when Reebok took over making the jerseys, it had something to do with the placement of the logo and the new seems at the shoulder. There wasn't enough room on the left, so they put the letters on the right.

Legionnaire *almost* hits it completely on the nose. When the switch was made to the Edge template in 2007, the Red Wings had to move the patch to the right side because there wasn't enough room above the tip of the wing to place the patch without hitting the seam there. The Wikipedia page that @geofff cites isn't quite correct as, offhand, these are the other jerseys to sport the captain's patches on the right side instead:

Want to talk ugly letter placement on a jersey? How about those Nashville ones that had an awkward seam on the shoulder that the letter sat on top of.

It looks so bad.

I'm pretty sure there was a Buffalo jersey that did this once, too.
