To add to this; Letang is 37 and still has 3 more years after this one. He’s clearly slowed down and his 6.1M/year will still be on the book when we need to resign Hutson, Dach, Reinbacher and most importantly Demidov.Letang is washed up. No, sorry.
Yes, Letang has bad contract. Anderson does too though. Habs maybe ask for Drew O'Connor to compensate for extra year?To add to this; Letang is 37 and still has 3 more years after this one. This is impossible to do as a trade. The only aging player that would make sense for Montreal is Crosby and he’s not moving from Pittsburgh.
Contracts affect player value.Lol at people calling Letang "washed" when he's being offered up for Josh Anderson
Is Letang what he once was? Of course not. Is he still a way better player than Josh Anderson? Obviously yes.

Letang is obviously a better player today than Anderson (though that margin this season is about as low as it's ever been).
He may remain that for next two seasons, or the gap may reduce further (not so likely it will widen).
Third year on Letang could be very ugly... Vlasic ugly.
Doubt any team pays anything close to present day performance value on Letang in trade...
That old . Anderson is 30 Letang is 37. We don't want or need a washed up Letang. Habs easily say NO.Why would the Penguins do this? If they move Letang its not going to be for a winger that old. They are still free falling with not much of a prospect base. If you want Pittsburgh players, offer picks and/or prospects.
Weird you chose last year and not this hear.Lol at people calling Letang "washed" when he's being offered up for Josh Anderson

Here were their stats last year:
Letang: 10 goals and 51 points in 82 games, +13 overall
Anderson: 9 goals and 20 points in 78 games, -18 overall
Weird you chose last year and not this hear.
Ahh that's why.
As a hab fan I'd take Letang as a mentor, but I wouldn't send Anderson back.
I'd be nice and give them a 3rd and low prospect, or a 13th forward like Pezzetta, but they're retaining on him.
We don't want or need Letang.
Anderson to Pens might give them the boost they needBecause the sample size from last year is about 4x as large as the sample size from this year.
Neat. Doesn't answer that poster's question then.
If the Habs don't want or need Letang, then this deal makes no sense for either side.
Yes, just not as bad as Letang's at this point.Anderson has a horrendous contract as well.
I certainly wouldn't aquire Anderson if I were Pitt unless the purpose was to retain and flip. A 50% retained Anderson could well have surprisingly high value and much easier/cheaper to do than retaining on LetangI don't think Letang has any notable sort of value, I think it's debatable if he even has positive value in the first place. That said, I flat out know that Anderson has negative value and the 1 for 1 swap does nothing for the Penguins.
If the Penguins can't get futures value for Letang, they're far better off just keeping him and letting him be a mentor for their young up and coming defensemen like Pickering and Brunicke. What does swapping him for another shitty contract accomplish? If Montreal was throwing in a pick, I can at least see a rationalization for it.

Don't disagree at all. From Habs pov, not sure they'd do that unless KH's personal insight into Letang gave them strong confidence in his play drop off this year is less physical decline related and more situational/external factor.
That's fine but don't get your panties in bunch when another fan base states that its not what they are looking for in trades because of the current lifecycle of their team. Pittsburgh should not be trading for 30ish year old players without picks/prospects being attached. Pittsburgh is headed in the wrong direction for doing chair deck trades. That old . Anderson is 30 Letang is 37. We don't want or need a washed up Letang. Habs easily say NO.
Yeah ultimately I think this deal just doesn't make sense for either side. I understand the hesitation with Letang from the Habs side but trading him for the sake of trading him isn't appealing for the Penguins either. The contract is just far too bad for me to think the Penguins would realistically get any value for him, so at that point why even trade him?
Beyond that, I think it's basically a guarantee that the Penguins trade Karlsson sometime in the 2025 off-season or 2025-2026 season (with heavy retention of course), so they kinda "need" Letang in the sense of having someone eating huge minutes on RD. You don't want to throw a rookie Brunicke in that role and risk ruining him by asking too much too early out of him.
I actually think the Vlassic comparison is valid in that the Sharks kept Vlassic for similar reasons: be a mentor for the young guys and eat up tough minutes to insulate the young guys a bit. Trading him wouldn't bring back positive value for him, so why even bother trading him?
Frees up cap space.
Gives PIT what is likely more valuable asset in a few years when he hits UFA.
Allows PIT to take on a RHD cap dump for more assets.
Cap space means nothing for a team that sucks. They'll have plenty of cap space to take on bad deals down the line.
Having Letang as a mentor and insulating Pickering and Brunicke is more valuable than what you're suggesting.
Letang’s contract length kills this deal for the HabsYes, Letang has bad contract. Anderson does too though. Habs maybe ask for Drew O'Connor to compensate for extra year?
