If a team has an up to $6mil cap dump they want off the roster and could use a backup, now is the time to call Dubas.

The contract Dubas gave out to him was heinous but I don't think anyone could have projected he'd fall off as hard as he did. When he signed that deal, he was coming off of a season with a .909 save% and a -2.8 GSAx, he was a perfectly mediocre starting goalie. He has completely collapsed since then.

Jarry is another marvelous example of "do not pay mediocre goalies". He's another guy on that Campbell/Merzlikins/Petersen group that wasn't good enough to justify the massive money/term they got.

Agreed. Term is a huge mistake when you go 5 years for these types of goalies, but GM's fall for it far to often. If it was 3 years, there is only one year left. Now it's a cap dead weight for 3 more years. Brutal and bad timing because the last thing the Pens need is anchor contracts while they are still trying to win with Crosby, Malkin, Karlsson.

Pretty funny to look back at the Pens’ goalie situation over the last couple decades. They really should have just kept Fleury for the entirety of his career. They got burned after a great Cup run by committing totally to Matt Murray and dumping Fleury. And then they essentially repeated the same thing (minus the Cup) with Jarry afterwards.
Paying goalies is just such a crapshoot period. They are the only players in the league who can earn big contracts after a relatively small sample of good games and it just blows up so frequently.

So did Jarry. In the 4 years before Jarry signed that deal, he had a .915 save% and made the all-star game twice.
Guess it's easier to say in retrospect about mediocre goalies, beacuse sometimes it works out and you get a Ullmark/Markstrom. Other times you get a Jarry/Merzlikins.

There are only a handful amount of goalies that can stay as a top 10 for 5 years. I agree, the rest of them have 2 or 3 good years and it's very bad timing when they have good years right before they need a new contract. I think many GM's know this but they wonder what they have without that goalie and cave in because they are more worried about what they are left with if they don't sign the guy.

I also feel team D and goaltending go hand and hand. They usually feed off of each other with team confidence/momentum. In many cases, a team with good team D makes goalies look better than what they are.

I think you get more Jarry/Merzlikins vs Ullmark/Markstrom. Best to keep the terms down or trade for someone like Markstrom who has a longer proven track record.

In many cases, team D makes goalies look bad and good so when you are looking for a goalie, you need to dig into the context into why they are bad or good.

He sucks and he has a bad attitude.

I hope someone takes him off our hands but I'm not holding my breath.

Yeah given how well he played leading up to the extension I didn't have an issue with the money, it was the term. He wasn't a guy you give five years to, you give two realizing even at his best his play wouldn't really warrant a huge raise after two years.

This is especially true given that he has some sort of mysterious health issues that the team has never identified outside of saying that if Jarry sticks to the regiment laid out to him it shouldn't effect his career. He doesn't seem like a "regiment" kinda guy

Of all the questionable moves Dubas has made since joining the Pens, re-signing Jarry to that 5 year deal tops the list.

Jarry is a mental midget who should never be relied on as your starter over that kind of term. At best, you sign him to a 1 year prove it deal and hope his "talent" can shine through in the short term. But over the long haul, his complete lack of mental game and unclutch play were a disaster waiting to happen.
