Given our track record with D (Niskanen, Daley, Schultz) I'll be eager to see what we can do with Corrado. He won't turn out to be the offensive dman they are but hopefully he can reach potential and be a young cost controlled depth defenseman.

On a related note, I love to re-visit those threads after we traded for Niskanen and Schultz. Over 90% negative outlook from the trading partner and many references to negative value.

Not to mention that with the injuries to some of PITs RD in WBS, Corrado if he's not helping Pittsburgh, he can add depth to WBS. And he's a RFA who might be an option for us going forward. I don't see any downside here for PIT.

Corrado will have a good chance to do something in PIT eventually as they like D-men that drive the offensive but are clueless defensively.

It's a good fit for him.

Many more 11-10 games between PIT-PHI!!

Hopefully, for his sake, Corrado doesn't get put in the press box again!

Straight to WBS...which is good because if he was reporting to the big Penguins he'd be spending most of his time in the press box again.

Doubtful Corrado ever plays for the Pens.

Maybe he ends up in Europe?

Why? He's 23, not 28. Maybe he winds up in Europe...but there's no reason for him to preemptively go there when he still has NHL upside. Hell, Tim Erixon is still playing in WBS trying to keep that NHL dream alive at 26 and Corrado is both better and younger.

Ok, maybe a minor league deal than. Can't see the Pens having him as one of their 50 contracts next season.

Fehr is an NHLer.. Problem is Penguins had 4 centers better than him, so he was out on the wing. He didn't really fit our system either. It's not like he's any sort of liability, just hasn't really been able to score. Maybe slightly overpaid, but it's really not a huge deal

A 23/24 year-old defenseman with any amount of upside will have at least a two-way contract, even if they're entering the season as the 10th or 11th guy on the depth chart.

He's outright better than guys like Gaunce, Erixon, Percy, and Prow, all of which have two-way deals on the Pens...and the Pens haven't been up against the contract spot limit all year.

There is little chance the Pens re-sign Bonino.

Fehr can now be reunited with Laich on the Marlies so that is nice.

Serious question, how far down the depth chart has Pouliot fallen to not get a callup with all the Pens injuries and now they trade for two more dmen?

FWIW Pens fans don't want Bonino back, him re-signing would be a bad thing in our eyes. He's been putrid this season and will undoubtedly get paid regardless because of his reputation.

As for Pouliot...going off of what Rutherford has said he's basically locked into WBS for the rest of the season because the team wants him to be playing 20+ minutes every night instead of playing 15 minutes a week. He needs to develop consistency and he's not going to do that unless he's consistently playing.

Pouliot is playing tonight for the Penguins against the Hawks.

Solid if completely unspectacular win win trade.

From the Leafs side

+Fehr is a solid and versatile veteran player. Adds both experience and depth, pre Boyle trade we would have been quite happy with adding him at 4C
+Satisfies expansion
+Add a 4th round pick
+Oleksy will do for a young Marlies D what Boyle does for the Leafs F, steadying veteran RHD

Boyle and Fehr are exactly what the Leafs were lacking among their forward group. Great return for Corrado. Pittsburgh didn't need Fehr anymore and needs cap space moving forward. Sensible move for both sides.

Pretty sure Fehr was acquired because we can take the cap-hit and he's eligible for the expansion draft (although Smith only needed a game or two to also be eligible). Regardless, based on what I've heard and the limited I've seen I don't think there is anybody in our top 12 that he will replace. Even if we only needed 1-2 games for Smith to reach his eligibility, I'm glad we don't need to play him at all anymore.

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Komarov - Kadri - Bown
JVR - Bozak - Marner
Martin - Boyle - Leivo
Soshnikov
Fehr

Wow!....that's a pretty good haul for Corrado, a guy the Leafs plucked on waivers from the Canucks....what's the story in Pittsburgh?....do these guys represent a salary-dump?

this was really two trades in one value wise.

1) Fehr and 4th for capsace
2) Corrado for oleksy

Fehr's contract gave him negative value, hence him clearing waivers at noon. From Pittsburgh's POV this is effectively a late 4th rounder for $2 million in cap space through next season and a guy who could be a depth defenseman next year (and potentially bolster the AHL club for a run, WBS has been pacing the AHL for the bulk of the season). You won't hear any complaints out of Pittsburgh.

Oleksy is an older, worse version of Polak. Good guy, hard worker, willing to fight...but he's exactly what you'd expect a 31 year-old career minor leaguer to be.

Heard the same stuff about Nisky, Cole, Shultz... sometimes a system or talent pool causes a player to develop or be stunted... the pens scouts have been great at picking retread guys who blossom in the system they run

Good trade for the Leafs. Better than a bag of pucks, which would have been enough. Good for Frankie too. Best of luck in his new surroundings.

Fehr is a great 4th line center option, but he is buried here and forced to wing... moreover we have sunqvist buried in the depth chart who needs a space up here so Fehr at a two million salary was very expendable...Olesky is just an average ahl-nhl tweener fill in guy.

Give Corrado regular playing time, a coach that likes him, a good system, he'll be a decent 5/6.
Night in, Night out he was watching inferior defenders play instead of him which probably destroyed any and all confidence he had.

No he's not that good but he's better than Fehr, Olesky, and a 4th.

4th > Corrado

would've been happy with a 7th tbh

In my dreams
I liked Corrado from his days as a Nuck', didn't expect much return from him but good on T.O to maximize on TDL. Hopefully he helps the Pens in whatever way he can.

Good post. Solid, if unspectacular move for both sides.

Never had an issue with Corrado and would have liked to see him given more of a chance here, but I trust our coaches assessment of him, day in, day out, and that he wasn't going to factor into anything here. If that is the case, better to get something for him.

Pittsburgh has done well with defensive reclamation projects, Schultz most recently, but I'm not sure Corrado has the upside or the IQ of the others.

Time will. In the interim, I wish Corrado well, and I'm satisfied with a 4th, a veteran and tough AHL defender, and a solid 4th liner with experience who we can expose to the expansion draft and could draw into our lineup next year if needed.

Win-win all around.
