Mikheyev and Engval are keepers. They both belong in top 9 on our team. They have showed enough. I hope we sign both to good CAP deals.
I think we need to move out AJ and/or Kappy to make more room. I would keep Kappy because he can play 3rd line RW and produce both on offense, defense and PK and the speed he brings really helps our team. AJ falls down too much but he has much more offensive output. He will get us some draft pick/backup goalie capital.

There is a reason teams want Kappy. I wouldn’t trade him. He skates us out of trouble at least a handful of times every game. I notice he is keeping his head up a bit more and looking around a bit and ragging the puck when he gets a little room afforded by his superior skating. Kappy is getting better and better incase people aren’t noticing. Ha i like Johnsson too. I would not trade Kappy period :)

I don't know why they took Kerfoot off 3C unless they want to know if they can move Johnsson but that just makes a hole at 3C

You could (if healthy and entering the playoffs) roll...

Soup-Matthews-Marner
Hyman-JT-88
Engvall-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Timashov-Spezza-Moore?
Gauthier

I would still like to add a bit of nasty on that 4th line like a Clifford at the deadline.

Engvall can play center and Keefe used him there in the past with the Marlies out of necessity but it turned in to a real success in getting them going. We could have 4 scoring lines by the end of this season.

Tavares line is the right place for Kerfoot. Always was.

I've been gushing lately about the Boston and Penguins* system where every call-up seem to perform beyond expectations based on their AHL play. They are simply that well prepared and put in a position to succeed. I feel like we've started to do that here too. Guys like Engvall comes up and knows exactly how to play and how to be effective personally. It's allowed him to go from a top 6 forward at the AHL level to a top 9 forward as an NHLer. Remarkable.

* Penguins are just ridiculous with this. They acquire a mediocre prospect in Marino, and somehow he's a top pairing d-man in his rookie season. They get injuries to Crosby and Malkin, so 27 year old Bryan Rust, long-time complementary forward, decides to play at an elite level. It's insane, absurd, astonishing, and quite simply incredible.

I couldn't agree more!

I think we are going to be (if not already) a model for player development in the NHL. I can see our team having Johnsson, Kappy, Korshkov, Moore, Engvall, Tima, Lily, Snadin, Soup, Dermott (been a Leaf for a while) Goat, Kokkanen, and on and on being part of our future.

We need to keep hitting on picks, developing, and searching for overseas talent. This is how we keep being a deep club.

We did 1-2 games of Engvall at centre in the NHL, he looked uncomfortable, his value is at the wing.

You sound like Mike Babcock ;) I did notice he was owned pretty bad on faceoffs that he has taken also. That is conducive to your point for sure.

Probably not surprising that a player who was being converted into a center in the AHL wouldn't be ready in the NHL.

I'd guess the conversion is not at an end, but isn't critical at this time.

They could still be working that process ... who knows?

I'm as big a Engvall fan boy as anybody, I loved him since game 1 when he came up. He looks comfortable and it comes naturally for him at the wing, just gotta celebrate what you have.

I probably wouldn't force the centre thing.

Me either, but if he can take face-offs on the PK, and Mikheyev returns next year I think they got something solid there.

Yea, he's an effective penalty killer, if he can work on the face offs, it's a useful skill if your centre gets kicked out or like you said, pk duty.

It certainly helps when the Marlies and Leafs systems and coaching philosophies are now aligned, makes it much more of a seamless transition. We've essentially replicated what Tampa Bay had for years under Yzerman.

Kerfoot is really good defensively though and he already has experience of playing against hard match-ups as he had to play up in the line-up during his time in Colorado. Although he looks good on the wing currently, his value is definitely as the 3C long-term, especially with his speed, positioning and defensive IQ.

One of the biggest problems we have had for the last few decades was having a minor league team that didn't mimic and mirror the big club in their system and gameplay. It only made it harder on players making the jump. Not just getting used to the faster harder stronger game but an entirely new system. Set up for success not failure we finally are.

Fun fact, Marino is paired with Marcus Pettersson who has also been quite good. The Pens got Pettersson for Sprong from Anaheim, who had drafted Pettersson using the Leafs 2nd rounder in 2014, which they had to forfeit due to a condition in the Peter Holland trade, where if he played more than 25 games it would get converted into a second rounder.

Classic Leafs.

Yeah, but than we would have missed out on the Peter Holland years. Those were some great times.....

I would try to keep him too but 1 of AJ or Kappy must go next year to make room for a backup and get ourselves a pick in next years draft. I could see Kappy getting us a mid round 1 pick next year and a decent backup. I am not sure AJ would get us any more than a backup. A mid 7th rounder himself that is all we would get back. Plus the cAP relief.

Yes that is the new goal under Dubie/Keefe. Unfortunately it was in verbal naming only with Babs because no one but Babs really truly understood the Babokian.

But then maybe having a 2nd rounder instead of a 3rd causes a huge butterfly effect and we don't end up with Engvall in the 7th.

Or maybe we should have just drafted Brayden Point in the 3rd round instead I like that option better.

Marchment played one game????
I’ve based my assessment on watching every Marlie televised game on Leafs Nation TV. Have you watched any Marlie games? He just got back from a serious injury but he is what he is. Great story, love the hustle, good size, but don’t expect Mika or Engvall skill.

I'll admit I wanted him gone, but it looks like he's working on his tunnel vision (never pass) - and his godawful tendency to skate out of prime scoring territory to the perimeter for a weak shot on goal. Drove me nuts.

Good for him.

The farm system used to only be a place where they dumped their mistakes.

Robbie Earl for a time was their top prospect.

Dark days....

he still whiffs a lot of good opportunities by either not being able to pull the trigger or hitting the goalie in the logo, but he creates a lot with his legs and forechecking. I think he'll be a poor man's Jason Blake offensively, which is fine if he keeps creating the opportunities in volume and being a plus everywhere else. It's too bad he isn't more efficient though, has all the tools just moves faster than his brain can process, he'd be a Nylander level player if he could think as fast as he moves

I saw things the last couple of games that show he's getting it. The tip pass to Engvall for the goal was something he never would have done up until a couple of weeks ago. His IQ will hold him back from an upper echelon player, but he's impressed me recently.
