Let's do a bracket challenge with a twist. Instead of picking 15 series right now, we do 8, then we circle back at the end of every round and make new picks based on the results of the round.

You make the picks. I'll keep score. Here's how the scoring system works:

- You name the winner and number of games. You get a point for every number of games off you are. If you're exactly right, you get zero points. Zero points is what you want.
- if you pick Leafs in 7, and Tampa wins in 7, that's 2 points, because you're off one game for each team.
- if you pick Leafs in 7, and they win in 6, that's one point.
- if you pick Leafs in 7 and they win in a sweep, that's 3 points.
- let's see if you understand the system. You pick Leafs in 7. They lose in 5. How many points is that? (Yes, that's right, it's 4 points, good job, I think you've got it now)
- you must be thinking by now, you can game the system by playing it safe and calling everything for 7 games. Not so! Getting the winner right is still very important.
- in addition, to encourage boldness, if you pick a sweep and get it right, that's a birdie. You get -1 points. So if you believe it's a sweep, call it a sweep! Don't hedge your bets and say 5 games.

After round 1, I'll post scores, tagging everyone who participated, as a way to remind you all to come in and make your round 2 picks. Make them on time and you can stay in the game. Lowest score after the finals wins mad bragging rights.

Make sense? Ok, good. Show us all how smart you are. Go ahead and predict the results of the eight first round series. Winner and number of games. No edits after Monday... I'm watching.

The only one I’m really comfortable with making right at the moment is Colorado over Seattle in 4, possibly 5.

I would picked Dallas in 4 or 5 over Seattle too.

And it’s not because of Seattle the team as much as it’s about their pathetic goaltending.

Grubauer-Jones is the worst tandem of the playoff teams and looks like a tandem you’d find on a Bedard tanking team.

I’m not saying the chances are nearly 0% that Grubauer gets hot and they are able to win, it could happen. I just don’t think it will. I would say it’s probably close to 0% something like that happens for Jones though, who has been one of the consistently worst performers in goal in the NHL over the last 5 years and on 3 different teams now. And there’s almost always someone playing better than him on almost every team he’s played on since then.

Grubauer’s underlying numbers this year don’t look quite as bad as last year’s though. He still breaking below even, but it’s not like by a -32 GSAx on most of the sites, like it was last year. It’s just a couple of goals below even.

I’m tempted to say Vegas over Winnipeg in 5, just because of how bad Winnipeg has been for two or three months, but Hellebuyck vs Brossoit/Thompson/Quick’s cremains is enough to more than level the playing ice.
