What are you guys memories of this player?

What impact did he have on the ice? Was he physical?

Why did he get traded to Pens?

Just asking out of curiosity.

Nedved was kind of soft as a player. That was smack in the middle of the legion of doom hayday and every GM was acting as if the apocalypse was at their door. I don't think he's a soft person because I know how big a set he must have had to defect as a teenager. He ran afoul of Mark Messier IIRC, and next thing you know he was packing his bags.

He was a soft player for the time he played in, though today, he probably wouldn’t be considered soft.
He will always be known as the player or compensation we received from the Blues for Mike Keenan

Messier said he was not a fan. But was the ring leader of the Czechmates. And the father of Libor Hajek.

Nedved was one of those players who seemed to shuttle back and forth between Pittsburgh and NY.

The weird Keenan compensation trade for Esa

Being included in the awful Zubov trade

Holdout and then a headache for headache swap for Kovalev

The under rated Czech line

A wrist shot that usually hit defenders shins or knees but was pretty lethal if it got on net

Highly underrated stick handler.
Got in trouble after defecting. Definitely has a set to leave his home like that and come to NA.

Nedved was a classic example of a really good player that was never quite elite.

He was a 2nd tier first line center... but not one that you win with.

Super talented dude. His wrist shot was just on another level. It just came off his stick so fast.

My favorite player. Started tucking my jersey in because of him.

He wasn't a soft player, but relative to the time he played, he was. He was dynamic in the offensive zone and had a wrist shot that was incredible. He was a better defensive player than people give him credit for, like Zbad. He was impossible to hit. Would just kind of bend around guys. He was a great player.

Late in his career he had an absolutely great training camp with us and deserved to be the 4th line center that year. Renney released him though. Don't know why he didn't get the spot and still haven't ever heard anything as to why. Was a shame.

Also, Messier is held in crazy high regard in New York, but he wasn't a much different person than Keenan, just a player instead of coach. Messier ran him out the first time. Messier, honestly, ran out a few great players we could have had. Yeah he brought the Cup here, but he may also be one of the direct reasons we never won another during those times.

Probably one of the bravest and mentally toughest players to ever play in the league, but on the ice that never really translated. I was a fan of him as a kid but I knew he wasn't the superstar he could have been. In that regard he is a lot like Kovalev. He just never fully blossomed and his best years were probably in Pittsburgh.

But knowing his story, how he got to North America, I have nothing but respect for him as a person. Players like Nedvěd, Nedomanský, Mogilny and Šťastný really deserve their own section in the HHOF for what they did, and how they paved the way for others, defecting from their country to chase their dream. Risking their life, and their family's lives in the process.

Was never a fan of his, but some of that is probably due to how bad the team was during his tenure making him seem worse by association.

always thought of him as a wiener.

held out in vancouver, for some reason messier didn't like him. didn't he hold out a second time ?

I dunno. seems like a wiener to me. idc if he defected; don't think he should get an award for self serving, as it was.

He probably would have been a fine 2C, but those Rangers were not well constructed and he was forced to be their #1 guy.

It wasn’t that Moose didn’t like Nedved as a person but he did not like his work ethic and didn’t feel like he would do anything for the team to win. It wasn’t some European thing because Moose loved Kovalov.

For one, he was nothing like ZBad, he floated too much and NEVER drove the net!!!
In regards with Moose, are you saying he shouldn’t be held in high regard ??? Keenan and Moose were nothing alike except for one thing….. THE EXTREME DESIRE TOO WIN

I always liked him. He was sort of like Kovalev in that you always thought there was something "extra" there that the player just couldn't or wouldn't give. Unfortunately he also played during the end of the era where everyone was expected to be some kind of tough guy, which he wasn't, and I think people game him too much shit for that. But, he was a very skilled player who could be a joy to watch, and if our teams didn't suck ass for most of his tenure and ask for him to do too much, I think he'd be remembered a lot more fondly. Also, that "Czech Mates" line with Hlavac and Dvorak was a bright spot in an otherwise bleak period for the franchise.

Solid player that lacked physicality

Messier had him shipped out for has-beens and proceeded to light it up for two years in Pitt.

Rangers reversed the earlier mistake (trade) and brought him back right before the dark ages began and was a real good player for the NYR's for 5 years.

wasn't really the game breaker you'd hope he was. He was able to find his game and his confidence in Pittsburgh but his elite level of play was still a product of the Pittsburgh super stars but he still had jam and the Czechmates were one of the bright spots in those dark Post-Cup Ranger years. Czechmates were a great 2nd line but they had to play as a 1st line so they really couldn't carry the team (but they were close to it)

I don't think he's given credit for being as feisty as he actually was, & he certainly wasn't soft. I remember him trading a series of nasty crosschecks with Messier during his first year in Pittsburgh. It was obvious there was more going on there that wasn't widely known at the time.

Overall as a player his best years were in Pittsburgh, because he wasn't relied upon to be the "guy".

Im part Czech, however I despised the Nedved years in general. As talented as Nedved was, he just wasn't the guy that could win games for the team. Incredibly soft on the ice, and didn't have the compete level against stiff competition. The Czechmates line was fun when it was on but I feel like they dissapointed in the end.
